H-M-S teams compete in West Lyon, Sioux Central meets

Paced by three runners who finished among the Top 20, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn finished second in the boys' standings at the Wildcat Cross Country Invitational. West Lyon hosted the meet on Sept. 11 at Larchwood.

George Vargas recorded a third-place finish, running a time of 18:30. Aiden Bush finished 12th in 19:52 and Ryan Grotluschen came in 18th with a time of 20:34.

Also competing for H-M-S were Damian Dodge, 32nd, 21:48; Blaine Finster, 38th, 22:25; and Easton Teal, 41st, 22:35.

Sheldon scored 21 points to win the team title. H-M-S scored 90 points and George Little-Rock/Central Lyon scored 92. Other team results were Western Christian 96, West Lyon 108, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 126 and Akron-Westfield 128.

H-M-S only had four varsity girls competing in the race. The two best finishes were 19th place by Lexi Croatt in 25:23 and 20th place by Gracie Knobloch in 25:25. Also competing were Kamryn Ebel, 30th, 27:04; and Jocelyn Abonce, 31st, 28:27.

Team results were GLR/CL 29 points, West Lyon 40 and BV/RV 59.

Hawk JV runners Carter Dolphin finished seventh (25:37) and Moises Gonzales placed 12th (27:51). Kamrynn Visser placed 22nd in girls' JV with a time of 34:29.

• vs. Sioux Central

Cross country runners from 20 schools navigated hills and curves during the Christ Smith Invitational, hosted by Sioux Central on Sept. 14.

The top finishers for the Hawk girls were Gracie Knobloch, 37th, 24:43; and Lexi Croatt, 38th, 24:45. Kamryn Ebel placed 63rd with a time of 27:51 and Jocelyn Abonce ran a time of 28:02 to place 65th. There were 80 runners in the race.

H-M-S did not have enough runners to record a team score. The Top 3 girls' teams were Alta-Aurelia with 57 points, Okoboji with 63 and Sioux Central with 75.

George Vargas led the Hawk boys with a 25th-place finish, running a time of 18:20. Other individual results were Ryan Grotluschen, 46th, 19:38; Aiden Bush, 57th, 20:20; Blaine Finster, 62nd, 20:37; Damian Dodge, 69th, 21:10; and Easton Teal, 80th, 22:32. Ninety-nine runners completed the race.

Spirit Lake won the boys' team title with 67 points and East Sac County and Okoboji were deadlocked with 78. Other teams in the Top 10 were Sheldon 98, Sioux Central 148, MVAOCOU 154, Sibley-Ocheyedan 182, South Central Calhoun 187, Manson Northwest Webster 212 and H-M-S 256. They were followed by Ridge View 259, Alta-Aurelia 291, OABCIG 334 and South O'Brien 346.

Boys' JV runners Carter Dolphin placed 45th (25:56) and Moises Gonzales finished 51st (27:32). Kamrynn Visser was 19th in the girls' JV race (32:20).

The H-M-S cross country teams will compete in meets at Alta-Aurelia on Sept. 25 and at South O'Brien on Sept. 28.
