Preschoolers pose with Mr. Maverick last week.

From learning how to be respectful, ready and responsible to having fun with peers that were missed all summer, it's safe to say the Clay Central/Everly Mavericks' first day back at school was an exciting one.

CC/E Custodian Mike Treinen, along with Alexandra Lewis and Wyatt Geerdes, raise the colors on the first day of school in Royal.

Opening Day for the Mavericks included a back-to-school flag raising ceremony at the front of the building in Royal on Aug. 24. Special guests included the Royal and Everly fire departments and Sheriff Chris Raveling, who stood alongside students for the duration of the ceremony to show their support for the school. Their presence showed the youngsters that they have community members there to serve and protect them throughout the school year ahead.

CC/E Director of Student Services Michelle Huntress gave a welcome greeting and let the children know how excited and honored the staff members were to begin the year.

CC/E custodian Mike Treinen was assisted by Alexandra Lewis and Wyatt Geerdes in raising the flag while the K-6 students and staff watched in silence. Lewis and Geerdes were chosen because they earned the Citizenship Award last school year.

Following the flag raising, students and staff participated in the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem was sung by Iesha Toft.
