• Hits train at crossing

A vehicle driven by Lindsey Jo Reese, 32, of Lake Park, was northbound on Redwing Avenue at 1:22 p.m. on Aug. 1. The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that as Reese approached a railroad crossing, the crew of the eastbound Canadian Pacific train sounded its horn and lights on the front of the locomotive were on and functioning properly.

Reese thought the train was stopped but upon hearing the horn, attempted to stop her 2009 Buick Enclave. The brakes locked up, leaving skid marks and pulling the vehicle to the right shoulder of the road, where it hit the side of the locomotive under the area where the engineer sits.

Neither Reese nor two crewmen in the locomotive were injured. Damage to the Enclave was estimated at $4,000. Little damage was observed to the locomotive. Reese was cited for Failure to Properly Stop at Railroad Crossing.

• Falls asleep at the wheel

Jaxon Otto Weier, 16, of Primghar, was driving north on Nettle Avenue at 7:50 a.m. on July 23 when, according to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, he fell asleep and drove off the roadway. The 2005 Ford Focus entered the east ditch, struck a field driveway and went airborne. The vehicle rolled and landed on its roof in a soybean field.

Weier was transported by Paullina Ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center with minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Damage to the Focus was estimated at $3,500. Damage to soybeans owned by Daniel J. Pohlen, of Hospers, was $500. Weier was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

• Vehicle skids into ditch

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Danielle Bailey Waggoner, 17, of Paullina, was driving west on 390th Street/B40, at 5:18 p.m. on July 27, when the wind blew the 2004 Cadillac Deville off the roadway when she overcorrected and lost control. The vehicle skidded to the ditch and rolled onto its roof.

Waggoner was transported by Primghar Ambulance to MercyOne Primghar Medical Center with possible injuries. Damage to the DeVille was estimated at $5,000. She was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

• U-turn leads to collision

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident which occurred on Aug. 2. The report stated that a 2013 Ford Escape driven by Rowan Katelyn Kolpin, 22, of Aurelia, was northbound in the 4300 mile of Nettle Avenue and was followed by a 2014 Cadillac XTS driven by Daniel Robert Crouch, 68, of Spencer.

The Kolpin vehicle turned right onto 430th Street to perform a U-turn and head south on Nettle Avenue. Crouch partially crossed into the southbound lane and as Kolpin made the U-turn, her vehicle struck the Crouch vehicle in the passenger side.

A passenger in the Crouch vehicle, Jean Marie Crouch, 62, of Spencer, was transported by Paullina Ambulance to Orange City Area Health System with minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Daniel Crouch also suffered minor/non-incapacitating injuries but was not transported. Kolpin was not injured. Damage estimates were $7,900 for the Cadillac and $4,800 for the Escape.

• Fog hinders visibility

Fog contributed to an accident that occurred at 6:45 a.m. on Aug. 3. According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, a 2021 Peterbilt tractor and semi-trailer driven by Rebecca Ann Strauser, 32, of Adrian, Minn., was eastbound on 390th Street and attempted a right turn onto Olive Avenue. Brent Andrew Wassenaar, 36, of Sheldon, was also eastbound and did not see the taillights/brake lights of the semi-trailer due to the fog. His 1998 Honda Civic struck the trailer before coming to rest in the southeast ditch of the 390th Street/Olive Avenue intersection.

No injuries were reported. Damage to the semi-trailer was estimated at $5,300 and the damage estimate for the Civic was $800. Wassenaar was cited for Following Too Close.
