• Drug charge filed

During a traffic stop on June 8 in the 4000 mile of 150th Avenue, a Clay County deputy observed an item related to underage tobacco use. The vehicle was searched and the deputy found marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Evan Schmitt, 20, of Everly, was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana, a serious misdemeanor; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Dark Windows, both simple misdemeanors. Schmitt was held to appear before the magistrate.

• Accident leads to charges

During an investigation into a vehicle in the ditch in the 3900 mile of 280th Avenue, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office made a traffic stop at 12:40 p.m. on June 10. Deputies were aware the operator, Michael Daniels, 48, of Dickens, was suspended in Iowa from operating a motor vehicle.

It was also determined that Daniels was the operator of the vehicle found in the ditch and that he was allegedly using fraudulent plates on the 2004 Dodge Ram he was operating.

Daniels was charged with Driving Under Suspension (2 charges), Failure to Maintain Control, Fraudulent Use of Registration and Failure to Provide Liability Insurance. He was held at the county jail awaiting his initial appearance before a judge. Further charges are pending investigation.

• Stopped for excessive speed

A Clay County deputy observed a Kia Optima traveling at approximately 90 mph in a 65 mph zone at 1:45 a.m. on June 18. A traffic stop was initiated at West 37th Street and Highway 71 where it was determined that Ty Jackson, 29, of Spencer, was under the influence of alcohol.

• Struck by unknown vehicle

Marla Jean Prenzlow, 65, of Snyder, Neb., was eastbound on Highway 18 on May 31 during a heavy rain event. She told the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office that an unknown vehicle traveling westbound crossed the centerline and struck the driver’s side of her 2022 GMC Sierra. The second vehicle continued west on Highway 18.

Prenzlow was not injured. Damage to the Sierra was estimated at $14,000.

• Gets stuck in ditch

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Joshua Jeffrey Edwardson, 21, of Spencer, was northbound on Vine Avenue and turned around in a field driveway. As he headed south, Edwardson lost control of his 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo which entered the west ditch. He attempted to get the vehicle out of the ditch and became stuck.

The report stated that Edwardson left the scene and the vehicle was located by a nearby resident. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the accident but due to the evidence chain of custody issues, Edwardson was not charged.

No injuries were reported. Damage to the Monte Carlo was estimated at $1,500. Edwardson was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

• Vehicle strikes deer

A 2018 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Kacy Lavonne Wolf, 28, of Paullina, was southbound on Redwing Avenue just past 480th Street when it struck a deer that ran out of the ditch. Damage to the Equinox was listed at $15,000.

• Unidentified object strikes vehicle on Hwy. 18

A Harris man was uninjured earlier this month when an unidentified object apparently struck his vehicle.

On Tuesday, June 6 around 3:15 p.m., Bill Selby, 93, of Harris, was driving eastward towards Hartley on Highway 18. He had just pulled out from Animal Medical Centers and was planning to turn north by the high school when his car was struck from the south by an unknown object.

“It was so loud when it hit, he said that he thought someone had shot a gun,” said his daughter, Julia Meyer, of Hartley, who was driving ahead of her father at the time of the incident. “It jolted the car and of course dented the car and caused the window to break.”

The object struck the area above the rear passenger-side door.

“If it was closer to the front, it may have come through the window or windshield,” Meyer said.

Neither Meyer nor Selby could locate the object that struck the vehicle at the scene of the incident.

“If anyone has any ideas or maybe picked up something off the side of the road that day, it would be nice to know what it could have been,” said Meyer. “Inquiring minds want to know just what was this disappearing object?”

According to Meyer, there were no other cars or trucks on the road at the same time the incident occurred. She also said wind speeds were minimal that day.
