Late runs salvage tournament split

A big inning against the host team helped Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn salvage a split at the South O'Brien softball tournament on June 10.

Trailing 5-0 entering the fifth inning, the Hawks scored six times to take the lead. They added an insurance run in the seventh to win the consolation game, 7-5.

The Hawks' biggest hit of the game was a home run by Gracie Knobloch. She also drove in two runs. Kinsey Schirmer contributed two singles and a run batted in, and Delaney Murphy added a single and two RBI.

Knobloch was the winning pitcher. She gave up four hits, walked one and struck out eight. Only one of South O'Brien's five runs was earned.

The Wolverines scored two runs in the second and third innings and another run in the fourth.

The Hawks dropped their opening game with Sioux Central, 15-0. The Rebels made quick work of the game, scoring three runs in the first inning and 12 in the second.

Knobloch had the only hit for H-M-S.

Kamryn Ebel pitched 1-2/3 innings, allowing seven hits, 15 runs and seven walks. Schirmer retired the only hitter she faced.
