Community Memorial Health Center activities schedule resumes busy slate

For Kris Todd, the difference has been night and day.

The activities director at Community Memorial Health Center has watched the schedule at the local facility fill to the brim with events and goings-on following the COVID-19 pandemic. Where once residents were forced into near isolation due to the virus' threat, they are now enjoying a full slate of events on a daily basis.

"Activities truly are a good gauge into the climate," Todd said. "I am impressed with our residents, their resiliency and willingness to participate."

Todd began her employment at CMHC in February 2021 when restrictions on activities were already well in place. A year before, dining, activities and other interactions had residents and staff attempting to socially distance by maintaining six-foot distances and masking. Activities changed to 1:1 sessions in resident rooms, and administration chose to divide the building with residents attending activities in one of the two main activity areas.

"Fast forward to the present, and residents enjoy socializing with one another, with family, with friends, and with staff," Todd said.

The schedule now features activities too numerous to list. Church services are back and residents now enjoy several special social events that allow them to mingle and socialize. Community guests have returned to put on special presentations, and residents also enjoy visits from pets and completing special craft projects, playing games and making food.

Exercise hour is always a favorite and Todd said special trips to car shows and other locations have been highlights for residents following the dark days of the pandemic.

"Community Memorial Health Center residents have shown to be very flexible and able to adjust to changes," she said. "They accept. Activities, and a resident's activity schedule, is one case in point."

Todd noted guests and volunteers are always welcome at CMHC to keep the schedule humming at full speed.

"Members of the community and surrounding area offer a great sense of enjoyment for residents during activities," she said. "We appreciate all those who contribute such time and attention to our residents. The activities opportunities are endless."

With the memories of the pandemic still fresh, Todd believed it was important to maintain a vibrant and diverse slate of events to keep residents busy and happy.

"Activities create experiences for residents, families and staff," she said. "They revolve around the needs and wants of individuals and should be person-centered."
