1998: Group organized to share info on new LEC

• June 17, 1948

More children than the average observer knew lived in the Hartley vicinity gathered in front of Neebel’s Danceland for the Kinderfest. Five hundred youngsters registered and took part in the Fogel Schiesen and Krug Schlager despite the intense heat. King Ronnie Dixson and Queen June Kroger led the parade of youngsters through the main streets of Hartley. A children’s dance was also held, followed by an old-time dance for adults.

Beacon Lodge No. 495 A.F. and A.M. celebrated its 60th anniversary by holding a special meeting at the local hall. The history of the lodge was read by the oldest member present, H.J. Grotewohl, to whom a special tribute was given by E.U. Thomas.

• June 14, 1973

The O’Brien County Board of Supervisors announced a proposed spending program for the county’s allocation of $156,485 in federal revenue sharing. Expenditures were designated for Operations-Maintenance, $60,000; Capital Expenditures, $96,485; and Public Safety, $10,000.

Approximately 140 students attended the joint Vacation Bible School sponsored by Trinity United Church of Christ and the Hartley United Methodist Church. Bible school at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church had a similar enrollment. Central Avenue Baptist Church was also hosting a Bible Time for local children.

The Olhausen-Gieser family started a memorial fund designated for a concrete floor in the Neebel Park shelter house. In addition to the initial $10 donation, $65 had been given to the project, including $35 from Elmer Neebel for whom the park was named.

• June 18, 1998

Neil Schroeder, son of David and Becky Schroeder, was among the 932 cadets who graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy. He received a special award for Outstanding Performance in the Political Science and International Affairs discipline. Schroeder was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

A group called O’Brien County Citizens for Public Safety was organized for the purpose of disseminating information about the proposed law enforcement center and upcoming bond issue election. Former O’Brien County Sheriff George Sleeper, of Hartley, was a member of the committee.

Poe Construction, of Montezuma, was the successful bidder for construction of a new press box at Peterson Field. The bid of $29,768 included the press box and the understructure. It was the only proposal received by the district.
