Marlys A. Tewes, 89, Paullina

Services for Marlys A. Tewes were held Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet. Pastor Mike Cooper officiated. Burial was at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Eldridge Family Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Marlys Ann Tewes, the daughter of Edwin and Anna (Hinz) Shafer, was born on Jan. 15, 1934 in rural Calumet. She received her education from Calumet schools and graduated from Calumet High School in 1952.

She was united in marriage to Orville Tewes on Oct. 25, 1953. Orville and Marlys started their family and lived in Hartley and Sanborn before settling on the farm in 1972 between Paullina and Sutherland. Marlys raised their boys on the farm and after they were grown, she started working at the Sutherland Nursing Home.

Marlys was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet. She enjoyed reading, word puzzles, needlepoint, playing cards, cooking and supplying meals to the men in the field. She also enjoyed traveling to different places. She especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marlys passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023 at Orange City Area Health, reaching the age of 89 years, 4 months and 11 days.

Left to cherish her memory are her three boys: Joel and Kim Tewes, of Primghar; Shelley and Kathy Tewes, of Paullina; and Mike Tewes, of Sutherland; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren: Nick and Angie Tewes and their daughter Adalynn; Barry and Jackie Tewes and their children, Tanner, Collin and Owen; Ryan and Chellene Tewes and their children, Treven and Brielle; Daniel Tewes and his children, Eliza and Garrison; and Tracey and Mat Ahrenstorff and their children, Myles and Gavin.

Marlys was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville; son, Brian Tewes; and siblings, Wally Shafer, Leora Ebel, Carol Wieben and Betty Alleven.
