• Enters ditch airborne

A vehicle driven by Evan John Rodger, 29, of Paullina, ran off the road while driving westbound on 460th Street, at 2:09 a.m. on May 3. According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, the 2003 Nissan 350Z entered the ditch airborne from a field driveway and rolled multiple times before coming to rest with Rodger trapped inside.

He was transported by Paullina Ambulance to Orange City Medical Center with serious/incapacitating internal injuries. Damage to the Nissan was estimated at $10,000. The report stated Rodger admitted to having been drinking and was tested for a pending OWI. He was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and Open Container-Driver 21 Years and Older.

• Vehicle strikes box culvert

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident that occurred at 1 a.m. on May 7. They reported that a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Austin Lee Meier, 23, of Bingham Lake, Minn., was westbound on 390th Street.

Meier stated it was foggy and he was traveling too fast for the conditions. He drove through a stop sign and the Malibu went airborne over Nettle Avenue before landing on a gravel road. It went into the north ditch, struck a “Level B” road sign and hit a concrete box culvert, rolled an unknown number of times and came to rest on its roof. Meier stated he was not wearing a seatbelt and had lost consciousness.

After regaining consciousness Meier discovered he had injuries to his face and was bleeding from his nose. He removed the vehicle paperwork and license plates in an attempt to conceal who owned the car. He walked several miles before being picked up by a friend. Meier told authorities he did not seek treatment and only attempted to notify law enforcement when he learned there was a hold on his wrecked car at the tow company.

Damage to the Malibu was estimated at $7,500, while damage to a concrete culvert owned by O’Brien County was reported as $500. Meier was cited for Leaving the Scene of an Accident-Injury and Failure to Reduce Speed to a Reasonable and Proper Rate.

• Collide near intersection

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that vehicles driven by Margarito Hernandez Reynaga, 39, of Worthington, Minn., and Tyler Daniel McDonald, 40, of Sanborn, were northbound on Pierce Avenue, at 1:34 p.m. on May 26. The McDonald vehicle slowed and began turning westbound on 310th Street.

Hernandez Reynaga believed McDonald was either pulling over or turning right, so he began passing within 100 feet of the four-way intersection. His 2023 Ford F350 collided with McDonald’s 2021 Chevrolet Silverado as it turned left. McDonald stated he had his left turn signal on before turning while Hernandez Reynaga said he did not believe McDonald had signaled a left turn.

Neither driver was injured. Damage to the Silverado was listed at $12,000 while damage to the F350 was estimated at $10,000. Hernandez Reynaga was cited for Passing Too Near an Intersection.

• Rear-ends stopping vehicle

Vehicles driven by Miguel Angel Placencia, 27, of Luverne, Minn., and Braden Steven Schwartz, 19, of Primghar, were eastbound on Highway 18 at 5 p.m. on May 23. The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Schwartz stopped his 2014 Jeep Patriot in the roadway for a vehicle that was turning northbound onto Pierce Avenue. Placencia did not see the Schwartz vehicle had stopped and despite attempting to avoid a collision, his 2022 Chevrolet 6500 struck the rear passenger side of the Jeep and entered the ditch on the southeast side of the intersection.

No injuries were reported. Damage estimates were $25,000 for the pickup and $10,000 for the Jeep. Placencia was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.
