Sanborn concluded their track and field careers at the 2023 coed state track and field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Kooper Ebel came up one place short of placing in the Top 8 of the Class 2A 400-meter dash finals on May 18. The senior placed second in Heat 2 and ninth overall with an H-M-S record time of :51.18.

"Kooper ran extremely well, breaking his own school record to finish his amazing high school career representing H-M-S along the way," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers.

Two other seniors, Bradley Zamudio and Ethan Diehm, along with Ebel and sophomore James Gellerman competed in the 4x100 relay prelims on Friday. The quartet ran a time of :44.99 to finish sixth in Heat 1 and 21st out of 24 competing teams.

"Our 4x100 had some changes at the last second and our kids responded very well," Eilers noted. "It was not what we wanted but extremely pleased with how kids responded and took care of each other."

He feels the state meet was "definitely a great way to wrap up the season." Other seniors whose careers came to an end are Ryan Borden, Bryce Dodge and Jonathan Ortiz.
