Girls score points in relays at War Eagle track meet

H-M-S finishes 10th among conference teams

Relays were the most productive events for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' track and field team at the War Eagle Conference meet. South O'Brien hosted the meet on May 1.

Moriah Otto, Jocelyn Abonce, Lexi Croatt and Kamryn Ebel combined for a fourth-place finish in the 4x400 (5:16.66), and Ebel, Evelyn Steffen, Croatt and Abonce placed fifth in the 4x800 (13:07.12).

Placing sixth in the relays were Frankie Mohni, Payton Diehm, Moriah Otto and Abby Otto in the sprint medley (2:08.73), and Pamela Mutombo, Abby Otto, Moriah Otto and Ebel in the distance medley (5:44.18).

Croatt added a sixth-place finish in the 1500 meter run (6:19.50) and Megan Otto placed sixth in the high jump (4'6").

The Hawks just missed scoring additional points, with two individuals and two relay teams finishing in seventh place.

Additional individual results were: 100 – Moriah Otto, eighth, :15.11; Mutombo, 18th, :16.89. 200 – A. Otto, 15th, :33.97; Megan Otto, 17th, :34.58. 400 – Steffen, 12th, 1:21.27. 800 – Abonce, seventh, 3:10.34. 100 hurdles – Mohni, seventh, :20.66. 400 hurdles – Mohni, eighth, 1:25.81.

Field event participants were: Shot put – Alexis Grover, ninth, 27'2-1/2"; Hannah Tessum, 11th, 25'11". Discus – Grover, 13th, 56'10"; Tessum, 14th, 55'8". Long jump – Diehm, 12th, 12'3".

Placing seventh in relay events were Mutombo, Megan Otto, Steffen and Diehm in the 4x200 (2:16.80), and Mutombo, Mohni, Diehm and A. Otto in the 4x100 (1:00.58).

Hinton edged Unity Christian, 165-163, to win the 2023 girls' team title. South O'Brien finished third with 74 points, followed by Remsen St. Mary's 50, Gehlen Catholic 46, MMCRU 24, West Sioux 19, Akron-Westfield 15, Trinity Christian 13, H-M-S 10 and Harris-Lake Park 8.

South O'Brien also hosted its Wolverine Relays on May 4 and the H-M-S girls finished seventh overall in the meet shortened by inclement weather.

Megan Otto was the best individual finisher, placing fifth in the high jump (4'6").

Best relay finishes were fourth place by Mohni, Moriah Otto, Emily Mutombo and A. Otto, 1:59.59; and fifth place by Ebel, Clara Funk, Croatt and Abonce in the 4x800 (12:45.29).

Otto, ninth, :14.59. 200 – Moriah Otto, 10th, :31.35; Diehm, 11th, :31.84. 400 – Abonce, 10th, 1:13.86; Ebel, 13th, 1:15.48. 100 hurdles: Mohni, 11th, :20.78. 800 – Funk, 11th, 3:20.96. Shot put – Tessum, eighth, 26'6"; Grover, 10th, 24'6-1/2". Discus – Tessum, ninth, 52'2"; Grover, 10th, 50'7".

JV results were: 100 – P. Mutombo, fourth, :15.27; Steffen, fifth, :15.61; Sprint medley - Diehm, A. Otto, P. Mutombo and Steffen, (2:15.41); 4x200 – Diehm, Megan Otto, P. Mutombo, Steffen, fourth, 2:05.77. Shot put – Natalie McDaniel, sixth, 16'3-1/2".

Sioux Central topped the team standings with 150.05 points. Alta-Aurelia edged Unity Christian, 77.05-77, to finish second, followed by South O'Brien 70, West Bend-Mallard 54, Trinity Christian 11 and H-M-S 8.
