Stepping up to help the team

Hawk girls top Unity Christian for fourth dual victory

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' golf team finished with a new low score for the season during a War Eagle Conference dual with Unity Christian. The Hawks defeated the Knights, 206-224, despite windy conditions at Sanborn on April 27.

Gracie Knobloch finished with the low round for the meet (45) and Kinsey Schirmer was No. 3 with a 50. Other H-M-S scores were Abby Kunzman 53, Morgan Grooters 58 and Elise Haack 65.

"I'm super happy to pick up the "W" over Unity," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "Our No. 1 didn't have her best night, but the cool thing about this team is that if one person isn't on, the others can come in with good scores to help us out."

Laura Vander Griend (48) and Sadie Goebel (52), of Unity Christian, were the runner-up and fourth-place medalists for the meet.

Earlier in the week, two players shooting rounds in the 40s led Hinton to a 209-224 win over H-M-S. Ashley Kramer and Addison Kovarna led the Blackhawks with rounds of 45 and 49, respectively, during the April 24 meet at Sanborn.

Haack and Schirmer finished Nos. 3 and 4 on the leaderboard, carding nine-hole scores of 53 and 54. Other scores were Knobloch 58, Grooters 59 and Kunzman 63.

"I'm just waiting for that meet where we all perform at the top of our game. It is such an exciting group of girls to coach," Kroese said.

The meet with Sioux Central on April 28 was cancelled.

Next on the schedule for H-M-S (4-2) are a WEC triangular with Harris-Lake Park and MMCRU on May 4 at Sanborn, and the final dual of the regular season at Akron-Westfield on May 8.
