Hawks move up the standings at 2 boys' meets

Finishes that score points for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' track and field team are becoming the rule and not the exception.

The Hawks began last week at the Okoboji Relays on April 24, where Kooper Ebel was the runner-up in a tightly-contested 100 meter dash (:11.40). H-M-S also scored well in the field events. Adam Schierholz placed third in the discus (122'6") and Jacob Cates was sixth (107'3"); Ethan Diehm placed fourth in the long jump (19'6-3/4"); and Cates added a fifth-place finish in the shot put (38'9-1/2").

H-M-S also enjoyed success in the relays. Ryan Borden, Bradley Zamudio, James Gellerman and Ebel ran to a runner-up finish in the sprint medley (1:38.40), and Borden, Diehm, Gellerman and Ebel placed third in the 4x200 (1:35.90). Damian Dodge, Carter Dolphin, Bryce Dodge and Blaine Finster came in fifth in the 4x800 (10:29.50).

Other individual competitors were: 100 – Gellerman, ninth, :12.20. 200 – Jr Araiza, 12th, :25.0. 400 – Aidan Espeland, ninth, :58.90; Dolphin, 10th, 1:01.40. 800 – Ryan Grotluschen, eighth, 2:22.40; D. Dodge, 12th, 2:34.20. 3200 – George Vargas, seventh, 11:29.50. 400 hurdles – Zamudio, 11th, 1:04.80. Shot put – Austin Smith, 10th, 32'6-1/2".

Araiza finished in a three-way tie for first in the JV 100 meter dash (:12.10), and Ethan Wiersma finished eighth (:13.40). In the JV shot put, Alex Billings placed fifth (31'4-1/4") and Kevin Arambula was seventh (28'1").

Okoboji won the team title with 189 points and Spirit Lake was second with 159.16. Other team scores were Sheldon 74, Sibley-Ocheyedan 45.33, Sioux Center 44.50, H-M-S 37, Harris-Lake Park 20 and Okoboji JV 9.

• Season-best finish at North Union

The Hawks reached a season-high of 94 points and a third-place finish at the John Larson Relays. The meet was hosted by North Union on April 27.

Diehm led the field in the long jump (19'11"), Schierholz won the discus throw (118'11") and Ebel crossed the finish line first in the 200 (:23.28). Ebel also placed second in the 400 (:51.59) as did Cates in the shot put (41'3-1/2").

Araiza, Diehm, Ebel and Gellerman combined for the win in the 4x100 relay (:45.19).

Other individual results were: 100 – Gellerman, fifth, :12.10; Dolphin, 15th, :13.49. 200 – Dolphin, 16th, :27.79. 800 – Grotluschen, seventh, 2:18.22; D. Dodge, 12th, 2:35.11. 1600 – B. Dodge, sixth, 5:23.24; Vargas, ninth, 5:27.95. 3200 – Vargas, fifth, 11:39.35; Finster, seventh, 12:08.67. Shot put (V) – Smith, 11th, 33'7-1/2"; (JV) – Billings, fifth, 31'3-1/2; Arambula, sixth, 29'6-1/4". Discus – Cates, fourth, 107'5".

Relay results also included: Sprint medley – Araiza, Ebel, Gellerman, Zamudio, third, 1:39.79. 4x200 – Araiza, Zamudio, Diehm, Gellerman, fourth, 1:42.20. 4x400 – Finster, Wiersma, D. Dodge, David Wetrich, eighth, 4:18.23. 4x800 – Grotluschen, Espeland, B. Dodge, D. Dodge, fourth, 9:36.12. Distance medley – Wiersma, Wetrich, Finster, Jose Perez, eighth, 4:40.48.

Estherville-Lincoln Central won the team title with 146 points and Bishop Garrigan was second with 130. Following H-M-S were Northwood-Kensett 78, North Iowa 77, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 66, North Union 58, West Bend-Mallard 43 and GT/RA 31.

The final regular season meets will be at South O'Brien on May 4 and Sioux Central on May 8.
