Girls win 2 golf meets despite blustery conditions

No matter which direction the wind was blowing, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' golfers were up to the challenge during two War Eagle Conference dual meets at Sanborn.

The Hawks' win on April 17 came against West Sioux, which only had two players compete. The final team score for H-M-S was 216.

All four Hawks topped the leader board, led by Gracie Knobloch who shot a 46. Other scores were Kinsey Schirmer 50, Elise Haack 54 and Abby Kunzman 66.

The wind direction may have changed the next day, but the Hawks were consistent in their play, earning a 208-216 win over Gehlen Catholic.

"I was extremely pleased with how the girls played against Gehlen Catholic," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "We knew they would be good competition and the ladies did a great job of executing despite the cold and windy weather conditions."

Haack and Schirmer tied at the end of regulation with identical rounds of 47, with Haack earning the No. 1 spot on the handicap hole. Knobloch finished fourth overall with a 52, and Kunzman's 62 was her best score of the season.

Jayden Barthole was the Jays' only medalist. She finished third with a 49.

Kroese is happy with the girls' progress so far and hopes to see more improvement as the season continues.

"I love the mentality these ladies bring to the game day in and day out. We've talked a lot about managing situations; not letting small errors become larger errors," she said. "Long run we need to be able to take the confidence we have had at our home meets and carry that over as we travel to other courses with different challenges."

H-M-S improved to 3-1 in dual play. The Hawks will host Unity Christian on April 27 and Sioux Central on April 28. The WEC girls' tournament will be held May 2 at Sioux Center.
