Relays to the forefront

H-M-S boys excel in several events at OABCIG track meet

A late addition to the schedule gave Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn an opportunity to excel in several relay events during the OABCIG Boys' Invitational.

The quartet of Ryan Borden, Ethan Diehm, James Gellerman and Kooper Ebel combined to win two relays and place second in another during the meet on April 18 at Ida Grove.

The first-place finishes came in the 4x200 (1:36.88) and sprint medley (1:39.03) relays. The same group came in second during the 4x100 (:45.41).

Borden and Diehm combined with Bradley Zamudio and Bryce Dodge to add another second-place finish in the distance medley (4:08.41).

H-M-S also had two individuals earn runner-up finishes. Dodge was second in the 1600-meter run (5:29.34) and Adam Schierholz was runner-up in the discus throw (126'1/2").

The Hawks finished fifth overall as a team, but were just two points short of passing East Sac County for fourth place.

Other individual results for H-M-S include: 100 – Gellerman, fourth, :12.39. 200 – David Wetrich, 15th, :30.09. 400 – Carter Dolphin, seventh, 1:03.02; Wetrich, 11th, 1:07.91. 800 – Damian Dodge, 10th, 2:46.44. 1600 – Jose Perez, eighth, 6:09.96. 400 hurdles – Zamudio, fourth, 1:04.88. Long jump – Zamudio, sixth, 17'9-1/4". Shot put – Jacob Cates, fourth, 40'9"; Austin Smith, sixth, 33'7". Discus – Cates, fifth, 109'3".

Additional relay results were: 4x800 – B. Dodge, D. Dodge, Dolphin, Wetrich, fourth, 11:26.95. Sprint medley – (B) Wetrich, Zamudio, Dolphin, Perez, 11th, 2:01.57.

OABCIG won the meet with 129 points. Ridge View finished second with 115, followed by Alta-Aurelia 108, East Sac County 73, H-M-S 72, Newell-Fonda 66 and Carroll 19.

The H-M-S boys' and girls' home meet on April 21 was cancelled.

Next on the schedule is a meet at North Union (Armstrong) on April 27. South O'Brien is the host school for the War Eagle Conference meet on May 1.
