Hawks fall to 2 WEC foes

From a win-loss perspective, the 2023 boys' golf season did not start favorably for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.

The Hawks fell short against Remsen St. Mary's by 30 strokes (178-208) in their opening War Eagle Conference dual on April 11 at Sanborn.

Jack Mastbergen had a good round, shooting a 43 to finish No. 2 among the Top 4 players on the leader board.

Other scores for H-M-S were Charlie Conway 51, Slayton McCarter 56 and Lucas Kroese 58.

St. Mary's Austin Klein (42), Collin Homan (44) and Hunter Pick (46) claimed the other medalist spots.

The Hawks also lost to South O'Brien, 203-209, on a windswept course at Primghar on April 13.

Mastbergen and Conway were the Top 2 golfers for the meet, shooting rounds of 48 and 49, respectively. Kroese recorded a 54 and McCarter added a 58.

The Wolverines' Ryan Fuller (50) and David Bottjen (51) were the other medalists for the meet.

H-M-S (0-2) will play Trinity Christian at Hull on April 20 and host Hinton on April 24.
