• Charged with drug possession

A Clay County deputy initiated a traffic stop in the 4400 mile of Highway 71, at 7:25 p.m. on Feb. 21. The report stated the deputy smelled the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Upon investigation, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were located.


San Juan Tomas Alberto Castro, 39, of Sioux Rapids, was taken into custody and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana-2nd Offense, a serious misdemeanor; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and No Insurance, simple misdemeanors. He was released on bond.


• 4 injured in Hartley accident

Four persons were injured in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 17, at a Hartley intersection.

The report stated that Madyson Torres, 18, of Hartley, stopped at the stop sign at Highway 18 and then continued southbound on North 8th Avenue West. Her 1994 Ford Mustang struck a 2009 Ford pickup driven by Gabriela Gonzalez Lemus, 37, of Hartley, which was westbound on Highway 18. Torres stated that she did not see the Lemus vehicle.

One child in the Gonzalez Lemus vehicle was taken to Sanford Sheldon Hospital by the Hartley Ambulance and two others were taken there by family members. Torres was taken to Spencer Hospital by private vehicle.

Damage estimates were $3,000 to the Mustang and $6,000 to the pickup. Torres was cited with Failure to Yield from a Stop Sign.

• Vehicle strikes utility pole

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Jeremy Steven Vogelaar, 39, of Ashton, was driving eastbound in the 5000 mile of 280th Street at 10 a.m. on Feb. 16 when two deer ran onto the roadway. Vogelaar swerved his vehicle, which left the roadway and entered the south ditch, striking a utility pole and coming to rest.

Vogelaar was not injured. Damage to the 2015 GMC Sierra was estimated at $9,100. The utility pole owned by Mid-American Energy was valued at $200.
