Spring enrollment largest ever at NCC

Enrollments for the 2022-23 academic year are looking high for Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon. In the first two semesters of the academic year the college is on pace for a record enrollment year.

The fall of 2022 was the largest fall class in the school's history dating back to 1966. The 1,811 enrolled students represent about a 5.54 percent increase from the prior year, when the headcount was 1,716. The previous record was in the fall of 2019 when enrollments were 1,777 students.

Enrollments for spring 2023 follow in a similar trajectory, topping all previous enrollment numbers with a record-setting 1,850. This represents a 3.64 percent increase over last year's enrollments of 1,785.

NCC has multiple terms and start dates throughout the year, so the fall and spring enrollment numbers are just two data points that the college records. Another strong indicator is the summer semester enrollments.

"Summer enrollments are looking strong but there won't be an accurate count until the official count day, which is 10 days after the start of the semester. We are on-track for a record-breaking year," said Registrar Beth Sibenaller-Woodall in a news release.

According to President John Hartog, by the end of the previous academic year on Aug. 6, 2022, NCC had taught 2,701 different students in its credit programs.

Spencer Hospital named one of nation's best

For the eighth consecutive year, Spencer Hospital is being recognized as one of the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals in the United States.

Spencer Hospital is the only mid-sized Iowa hospital to have earned this distinction every year it has been awarded and just one of 17 mid-sized hospitals nationally, out of approximately 900, to be an eight-time recipient. The nation's top rural hospitals are recognized annually by the Chartis Center for Rural Health. Regarded as one of the industry's respected designations of performance excellence for mid-sized hospitals, the annual Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals award is based upon the results of the Hospital Strength INDEX developed by iVantage Health Analytics.

iVantage identifies top performing hospitals by aggregating hospital-specific data for over 50 service and outcome variables across eight pillars of performance, resulting in an overall hospital strength index. The majority of data used in the study is derived from public sources. Areas in which top hospitals particularly distinguish themselves include quality and outcomes; patient satisfaction; costs and charges; market share; and financial stability.
