• Assaults jailer following arrest

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for help at 6:50 p.m. on Feb. 15. The caller reported that a strange female had just tried to enter the home at 2030 360th Street, Spencer, after being told to leave. The victim positively identified the woman to authorities as Jessica Thornton, 34, of Spencer, who had already left the scene.

Spencer Police Department located Thornton at 7:38 p.m. at 9th and Grand Avenue in Spencer. She was arrested and booked into the county jail for Simple Misdemeanor Assault and Trespassing.

While at the jail, Thornton allegedly assaulted a jailer. She was charged with Assault on a Person of Certain Occupations with Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, a Class D felony. A charge of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia was also listed on the report. Thornton was held to appear before the magistrate.

• Missouri man faces drug charges

A Clay County deputy stopped a vehicle in the 4700 mile of Highway 71, at 6:20 p.m. on Feb. 12 for excessive speed. Upon making contact with the driver, Austin Light, 25, of Novinger, Mo., the deputy detected the odor of marijuana. Upon further investigation, a vape pen containing THC oil, marijuana and other items were located in the vehicle and on Light’s person.

Light was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana 1st Offense and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and was also cited for Speed. He was cited and released.

• Juvenile found with meth, marijuana

A juvenile female, 16, of Spencer, was cited into Juvenile Court on drug charges following her arrest at 11:57 p.m. on Feb. 15.

According to the report, a Clay County deputy initiated a stop in the 3200 mile of Highway 71 for a traffic violation. The deputy smelled the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Upon investigation, the deputy was provided a marijuana pipe and the juvenile was taken into custody. A further search of the vehicle discovered marijuana, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

The female was cited into Juvenile Court for Possession of a Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine and P.C.S.-Marijuana, both serious misdemeanors; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. She was released to the custody of her father.

• Several charges filed following accident

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a report at 7:35 p.m. on Feb. 17 of an alleged reckless driver who was southbound on U.S. Highway 71. The communications center then received multiple calls in reference to a single vehicle accident in the 3100 mile of Highway 71.

According to the report, Jolynn Pullen, 42, of Spirit Lake, was driving at a high rate of speed when she lost control of her 2012 Chevrolet Malibu, which entered the west ditch, rolled over and came to rest on the passenger side. Pullen initially fled the scene but was located by the Spencer Police Department. No injuries were reported and damage to the Malibu was estimated at $10,000.

Following an investigation, Pullen was arrested and charged with OWI-1st Offense and Possession of a Controlled Substance, serious misdemeanors; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Failure to Maintain Control and Careless Driving, simple misdemeanors; and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability-Accident Related. Pullen was held in jail to await an initial appearance before the magistrate.

• Debris on road disables vehicle

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 2012 Nissan Quest driven by Jeremy James Lemons, 40, of Sutherland, was eastbound in the 6200 mile of 470th Street at 5:54 a.m. on Feb. 10. Due to headlights from an approaching vehicle, Lemons did not see tire debris in his lane of travel. The debris became lodged under the Nissan and disabled it.

No injuries were reported. Damage to the Nissan was estimated at $3,100.
