H-M-S boys advance to state bowling tourney

Team, 1 individual to bowl at Waterloo next week

In its first postseason competition as a program, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' bowling team has earned a trip to the state tournament at Waterloo.

The Hawks won the team title at the state qualifying meet Tuesday at Locomotion Lanes in Sanborn. H-M-S topped the standings after the series of 15 baker games with a cumulative score of 2869. The next closest team was Shenandoah which finished at 2689.

In addition, sophomore Jack Mastbergen qualified to compete as an individual at state. He was the top bowler at the qualifying meet, rolling a 700 series (248, 275, 177). Senior Marcus Aaron just missed qualifying as an individual as he finished fifth.

The 1A state team tournament will be held Monday, Feb. 20, at Cadillac XBC (Xtreme Bowling Center). The 1A individual tournament will follow on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Maple Lanes Bowling Center.
