Daycare fundraiser is March 4

The Hartley Community Daycare Center will hold its annual fundraiser on Saturday, March 4.

Donors are needed for the Hartley community blood drive on Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 12:30-5:30 p.m. at the Hartley Community Center. New donors are especially needed.

CC/E preschool, kindergarten round-up is March 14

Local students and parents are invited to check out what’s new at Clay Central/Everly Elementary on March 14 during the school’s preschool and kindergarten round-up.

Visitors will be able to meet the CC/E staff and tour the school’s updated facilities. Those unable to attend can still register for the 2023-24 school year by calling the elementary at (712) 933-2241.

Movie to be shown at Hartley library Feb. 17

The Hartley Public Library is hosting a screening of “Murder on the Orient Express” as part of the Book to Film Series, on Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.

If you would like to read the book by Agatha Christie on which this movie was based, the library will have multiple copies available to be checked out. Also feel free to just come for the movie. Popcorn and drinks provided.

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.

Financial goal setting training offered at Orange City

Community professionals can gain tools and resources to help their clients define financial goals, use credit wisely, manage debt effectively and access appropriate community resources with the “Your Money, Your Goals” toolkit and workshop from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. A workshop will be offered at Orange City on Tuesday, March 21, from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

This professional training is designed for service providers, volunteers, clergy members or anyone interested in helping others take steps towards financial stability and self-sufficiency.

“Professionals will learn how to help themselves and others when they develop a spending plan and save money, get and review a credit report, make a simple plan to pay down debt, access appropriate community resources, and understand influences on financial decision-making,” said Carol Ehlers, Extension human sciences specialist in family wellbeing and finance.

If a person is interested in participating in “Your Money, Your Goals” but cannot make the date listed above, two other options are available on April 4 at Sioux City or April 12 at Storm Lake. All three offerings will be held at the local Extension office in the corresponding city.

Grassley staff to hold local office hours

The staff of Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) will hold traveling office hours focused on the 2023 Farm Bill in 14 counties during the months of February and March. Iowans seeking information or wishing to share views on matters related to the Farm Bill may stop by to express their opinions during the scheduled hours.

Regional Director Jacob Bossman and Interim Regional Director Garrett Arbuckle will hold hours in Sutherland on Friday, March 10 from 10-11 a.m., at Gen. N.B. Baker Library, 315 Ash St. Staff from additional Iowa congressional offices are invited and expected to be in attendance. Grassley will not be present.

Winter fishing cutoffs looming

Ice fishing shelters, left unattended, must be removed from all state-owned lands and waters by Monday, Feb. 20.

Ice shelter owners are encouraged not to wait until the last minute to get their shelter off the ice. If a structure falls through the surface, the owner is responsible for getting it out of the lake.

Additionally, area anglers should take note that the walleye fishing season on Spirit, East and West Okoboji lakes ended on Feb. 14. It will close after that date and reopens on May 6. These are the only Iowa lakes that have a closed season for walleye.
