Second-half resurgence

H-M-S girls rally to defeat Trinity Christian in overtime

Trinity Christian controlled the first half, but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn came back during the final two quarters and in overtime to claim a 44-40 win on Feb. 3 in Hartley.

The Tigers scored the first nine points and led 12-4 at the end of the first quarter. They extended the margin to 11 midway through the second quarter and led 18-10 at half time.

The Hawks still trailed by that margin when they began a 9-0 run late in the third quarter, giving them their first lead. A late three-pointer put Trinity Christian back in front, 25-23.

In the fourth quarter, H-M-S could do no better than tie the score twice and trailed 33-29 with 2:25 to play. A basket by Abby Douma cut the margin to two and Kylee Schiphoff scored off a rebound in the final seconds of regulation to force a 33-33 tie.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard first in overtime and eventually extended the lead to 44-37. Trinity Christian managed a late three-pointer, but H-M-S hung on to claim its second victory of the season.

Balanced scoring helped the Hawks earn their first win in War Eagle Conference play. Schiphoff scored 14 points, Douma scored 10, Emily Mutombo scored nine, Moriah Otto scored eight and Lindsey Van Es made a three-pointer.

Douma finished with 13 rebounds and two blocks; Schiphoff had eight rebounds and two steals; Otto came down with seven rebounds; Mutombo had six rebounds and four steals; and Elise Haack had two rebounds and two steals.

• vs. Harris-Lake Park

Harris-Lake Park completed the season sweep of H-M-S with a 64-45 win on Jan. 31 at Lake Park. It was the first time in four years that H-LP won both regular season meetings.

The Wolves led 14-8 after the first quarter and increased the advantage to 35-21 at half time. The score was 54-35 at the end of the third quarter.

Schiphoff led H-M-S with 13 points. Other scoring included Mutombo with nine points, Otto with eight, Gracie Knobloch with five, Frankie Mohni and Haack with three, and Van Es and Douma with two.

Otto grabbed 12 rebounds and added two assists and two steals; Mohni had six rebounds and three assists; Schiphoff had six rebounds and two steals; Douma also pulled down six rebounds; Knobloch had five rebounds and two steals; and Mutombo had five assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Sibley-Ocheyedan scored more points in the first half than H-M-S scored in the entire game on Feb. 2 at Sibley. The Generals kept up the scoring pace in the second half and rolled to a 94-41 win.

The Hawks kept the score close in the first quarter, which ended with S-O leading 20-15. But in the second quarter the Generals' lead grew to 48-27. H-M-S was then outscored by a 46-14 margin over the final 16 minutes.

Otto scored 11 points, Schiphoff scored nine, Mutombo scored eight, Douma scored four, Haack and Mohni scored three, Eliza Tewes scored two and Van Es made a free throw.

Rebounding leaders were Mutombo with seven and Otto with six. Douma, Knobloch and Schiphoff each had four. Mutombo and Mohni also had three assists, Schiphoff had two assists and Douma had two blocks.

H-M-S (2-17, 1-8) closed out the regular season on Feb. 7 at South O'Brien.
