Starting the year with a bang

H-M-S bowlers earn first victories in program history

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's bowlers opened 2023 in historic fashion, as both varsity teams earned their first wins of the season and the first meet victories in program history.

Competing at Hawarden on Jan. 9, the Hawk boys edged West Sioux by 14 pins, 2655-2641, while girls' margin of victory was more comfortable, 1734-1648.

Individual boys' scores for H-M-S were: Dawson Niichel 203-210, 413; Jack Mastbergen 198-172, 370; Drew Prins 191-172, 363; Marcus Aaron 173-169, 342; Riley Russell 184-134, 318; and Skyler Shaffer 167-112, 279. Baker game scores were 156, 171, 172, 155 and 195.

H-M-S girls' scores were: Annika Overmire 129-121, 250; Jordan Lux 118-131 249; Meghan Larson 106-142, 248; Lexi Croatt 90-117, 207; and Keyanna Brower 56-74, 130. The Baker game scores were 156, 125, 123, 140 and 106.

Bowlers from West Sioux had the high games for boys (220) and girls (201).

Boys' junior varsity scores for H-M-S Team 1 were: Owen Haspels 134-124, 258; Ian Werkmeister 102-144, 246; Aiden Nitzel 135-102, 237; Brett Stoltz 112-108, 220; and Dominic Tripp 86-90, 176. Team 2 scores were: Brennan Stoltz 120-138, 258; Caleb Aaron 124-126, 250; Owen Tifft 113-128, 241; Austin Smith 122-81, 203; and Damian Dodge 88-101, 189.

• vs. MMCRU

H-M-S didn't fare as well against MMCRU, as both varsity teams fell short on Jan. 12 at Remsen.

The varsity boys were defeated, 2854-2667. Two-game scores were Russell 227-147, 374; M. Aaron 183-187, 370; C. Aaron 157-197, 354; Mastbergen 153-198, 351; Prins 156-158, 314; and Niichel 146-162, 308. Baker game scores were 168, 202, 168, 164 and 202.

H-M-S fell to the MMCRU girls, 2557-1937, but finished with their best overall score so far this season.

Individual results were Lux 169-203, 372; Croatt 156-110, 266; Larson 114-128, 242; Overmire 141-82, 223; Olvera 91-114, 205; and Brower 79-71, 150. Baker game scores were 130, 108, 148, 128 and 115.

Lux's 203 was the high girls' game for the meet. Carson Miller, of MMCRU, rolled a 235 for the best boys' game.

Two H-M-S JV teams also competed. Team 1 scores were Shaffer 177-134, 311; Werkmeister 158-120, 278; Tifft 150-125, 275; Dodge 113-159, 272; Brennan Stoltz 124-141, 265; and Gonzalez 88-126, 214. Baker game scores were 199, 127, 138, 165 and 177.

Team 2 scores were Brett Stoltz 138-132, 270; Haspels 180-89, 269; Meendering 159-100, 259; Tripp 112-117, 229; Smith 117-88, 205; and Nitzel 86-101, 187. Baker game scores were 120, 94, 101, 144 and 92.

The 180 rolled by Haspels was the high JV boys' game.

The Hawks will compete on Jan. 24 against Pocahontas Area at Locomotion Lanes in Sanborn. The Jan. 23 meet with Sioux Central has been rescheduled to Jan. 27.
