1973: Groups unite to ‘Save the Stop Light’

• Jan. 22, 1948

L.W. Anderson, Mike Colling, Carl Rahn and Harry Ketelsen were elected to terms of two years on the Hartley Chamber of Commerce board. A committee was appointed to get action started on a skating rink. Chamber members were less enthusiastic about a spring merchandise fair, so the matter was dropped.

A connecting rod gave out in the largest engine at the municipal light plant. The two smaller engines were used to supply electricity on a rotating basis until the load was sufficiently reduced. Damage to the big engine was repaired before the load became sufficient to demand its use.

Rex Conn, son of Dr. and Mrs. F.A. Conn, was appointed Assistant General Sales Manager of W.A. Sheaffer Pen Co. in Fort Madison. Conn had been with the company for 20 years and previously headed the wholesale sales division.

• Jan. 18, 1973

Among those participating in the presidential inauguration parade in Washington, D.C. was Dr. Robert Reinke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Reinke, of Hartley. Dr. Reinke was one of the riders of the Sioux City White Horse Patrol.


Opposition to the removal of the stoplights at the intersection of Central Avenue and First Street South was growing. The Chamber of Commerce board passed a resolution opposing the proposed removal. Representatives of the Federated Women’s Clubs in Hartley gave first priority to the “Save the Stop Light” campaign in the Safety Division of the Community Improvement Project. Representatives planned to meet with the council to discuss the possibility of finding replacement parts for the faulty control box.


• Jan. 22, 1998

Clay and O’Brien County Conservation Boards appointed Shawn Gehlsen as naturalist. The Denison native’s responsibilities included providing environmental education programs for school-age children and the general public in both counties.

The individual and organization nominated for the Governor’s Volunteer Award were recognized by the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn School District. The individual nominee was Barbara Christenson, of Hartley, who was in her sixth year as a school volunteer. The district also nominated the Sanborn American Legion Post, which had cooperated with the district in Veterans Day and other patriotic programs.
