Season-high point total at Forest City Invite

Okoboji/HMS crowns 2 mat champs at tourney

Two champions and two runners-up helped Okoboji/HMS amass its highest point total at a wrestling tournament this season. The Pioneers scored 142 points and finished fourth at the Forest City Invitational on Jan. 7.

Noah Strantz won the 160-pound title and Sam Pas was champion at 220. Adding second-place finishes were Dylan Jones at 120 pounds and Tyce Hanson at 126.

Four wrestlers from H-M-S competed, with three earning fifth place at their respective weights.

Nathan Stofferan opened the 106-pound bracket with a loss by fall to Deegan Moore, of Forest City (1:33) and then lost a major decision to Joseph Peterson, of Emmetsburg (14-2). The freshman won the fifth-place match with a 6-5 decision over Weston Miller, of North Butler-Clarksville.

Wrestling at 152 pounds, Bryce Dodge lost by fall to Ryan Sommerlot, of Pocahontas Area (0:35); pinned Owen Johnson, of Algona JV (4:35) and Samuel Martinez-Macias, of North Butler-Clarksville (1:40), before losing by fall to Ryan Wirtz, of Emmetsburg (5:07). Dodge defeated Bradyen Yates, of Emmetsburg (7-2), in the fifth-place match.


James Gellerman won his first match at 170 pounds, pinning Ashton Fairhurst, of North Butler-Clarksville (5:05). He then lost by fall to Jace Nelson-Brown, of Emmetsburg (1:10), pinned Carter Burkhardt, of Charles City (3:32), and Wyatt Rosenmeyer, of Algona JV, in just 12 seconds. Gellerman then lost by fall to Dane Kitzinger, of Algona (2:00), but came back with a win by fall over Ryan Panbecker, of Pocahontas Area (3:15), in the fifth-place match.

Camden Ball did not place at 132 pounds. He lost by fall to Cody Harms, of Algona JV (3:21) and to Dylan LaPolice, of Charles City (1:57).


Other fifth-place finishers for Okoboji/HMS were Brennan Baschke at 138 pounds and Keyshawn Smith at 285.

In the team standings, Algona finished first with 242 points, Emmetsburg was second with 185.5 and Clear Lake was third with 168.5. Following Okoboji/HMS were Pocahontas Area 113, Charles City 106.5, Forest City 102.5, North Butler-Clarksville 75.5, Algona JV 44 and West Fork 8.
