Book Club is looking for new members

Between the Covers Book Club at the Hartley Public Library is looking for new members. If your New Year’s resolutions include reading a wide variety of books and joining like-minded bibliophiles in entertaining discussions about books, then this could be the book club for you.

Stop at the library and pick up a copy of “Where the Forest Meets the Stars” by Glendy Vanderah, which is the January book club book. Future books this year will include mysteries, fantasy, historical fiction and more. Discussions of the books are held on the last Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m.

Blood drive collects 42 units

LifeServe Blood Center collected 42 units of blood during the Dec. 28 drive in Hartley. The units collected have the ability to save up to 126 local lives.

For over 15 years Hartley and surrounding communities have supported LifeServe Blood Center with at least one blood donation opportunity every two months. Blood products collected go to 120-plus local hospitals.

The next Hartley blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 12:30-5:30 p.m.

Adult craft time at Hartley Public Library

Hartley Public Library will be hosting a Craft for Adults on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 6 p.m. Enjoy repurposing old teacups and saucers into bird feeders. There is no fee for this program and all supplies are provided.

HLC food pantry

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.

Parkinson’s disease program offered in Hartley

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer “A Journey Through Parkinson’s Disease,” a free three-session educational series at the Hartley Public Library. The series starts on Wednesday, Jan. 11 and continues on Jan. 18 and Jan. 25, and runs from 6 p.m.-7:15 p.m.

Although there is no charge to attend the program, registration is requested to ensure adequate space and materials. A complimentary meal will also be provided to all attendees.

Trout stocking to be held near Everly

The Iowa DNR will release trout at Scharnberg Pond east of Everly on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 12:30 p.m.

The stocking is part of a DNR programs that brings trout to areas that would not support them during warmer months. Winter trout stockings are a great place to take kids to catch their first fish. A small split shot and a hook with almost any kind of bait will catch trout.

The popular program is supported by the sales of the trout fee. Anglers need a valid fishing license and pay the trout fee to fish for or possess trout. The daily limit is five trout per licensed angler with a possession limit of 10.

Children age 15 or younger can fish for trout with a properly licensed adult, but they must limit their catch to one daily limit. They can buy a trout fee, which will allow them to catch their own limit.

Winter trout stocking events are dependent on favorable weather and safe ice conditions. Check the DNR Trout Fishing website at http://www.iowadnr.gov/trout for possible changes to the schedule.
