Royals take 2 from H-M-S bowling teams

Hawk boys fall just 20 pins short of catching MMCRU

For the first time Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn hosted an official high school bowling meet on Dec. 12 at Locomotion Lanes in Sanborn.

The H-M-S varsity boys lost to MMCRU by 20 pins, 2698-2718. Individual game scores were Dawson Niichel, 197-171; Drew Prins, 147-149; Caleb Aaron, 186-128; Jack Mastbergen 176-223; Marcus Aaron, 173-165; and Riley Russell, 205-151. Mastbergen's 223 was the overall high game for the varsity boys.

MMCRU also won the varsity girls' meet with a team total of 2905, while H-M-S finished with 1698. Scores for the Hawks were Lexi Croatt, 132-84; Keyanna Brower, 64-144; Annika Overmire, 121-85; Destiny Olvera, 110-125; Meghan Larson, 122-111; and Jordan Lux, 113-167.

The high girls' game of 180 was bowled by Breanna Staab of MMCRU.

The teams also bowled five "Baker games," where five bowlers from each school alternated bowling two frames. Those game scores are added to the Top 5 individual totals to determine final team results.


The Hawk boys' Baker game scores were 185, 167, 180, 188 and 203. The girls' scores were 106, 106, 99, 99 and 107.

Scores for the H-M-S JV boys were Damian Dodge, 122-129; Owen Tifft, 144-108; Brennan Stoltz, 104-125; Austin Smith, 74-104; Skyler Shaffer, 137-159; Owen Haspels, 132-111; Aiden Nitzel, 126-177; Ian Werkmeister, 150-120; Moises Gonzales, 78-90; and Dominic Tripp, 103-96. They did not bowl Baker games.

The Hawks' meet with West Sioux on Dec. 13 was postponed. H-M-S bowlers will resume their season in a rematch with MMCRU on Jan. 12 at Marcus.
