• Fire department responds to 2 calls

The Hartley Fire Department responded to two calls on Dec. 12. Firemen received a report of smoke at 211 N Central Avenue, where they encountered an odor and a light haze coming from the residence. A condensation pump for the furnace had malfunctioned and overheated, which melted it.

Shortly afterward the fire department was called to 3519 Tyler Avenue, where a small shop was on fire. The attic area of the northwest part of the building was on fire when firemen arrived. An oil burner in that part of the building is suspected to have contributed to the fire.

The department needed approximately two hours to put out the flames and do some overhaul. Damage is estimated at between $20,000 and $25,000.

• Fails to stop at intersection

An accident occurred at 1:24 p.m. on Dec. 3, at an O’Brien County intersection. The sheriff’s report states that Amanda Jo Dessel, 36, of Paullina, was northbound on Redwing Avenue and failed to stop for a stop sign. Her 2003 Ford Excursion collided with a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Henry Dale Iedema, 78, of Sanborn, who was eastbound on 280th Street.

Neither driver was injured. The damage estimate for each vehicle was $4,000. Dessel was cited for Failure to Obey Stop Sign and Yield Right of Way.

• Semi jackknifes into ditch

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that James Allen Masteller, 58, of Coon Rapids, Minn., was in the northbound lane of Iowa 60 passing Exit 31, at 5:20 a.m. on Dec. 12. While crossing an overpass, Masteller lost control of his 2020 Volvo tractor/semi-trailer which left the roadway to the right and entered the south ditch, where it jackknifed.

Masteller was not injured. Estimated damage to the semi owned by Magnum Investments, LLC, of Kearney, Neb., was $5,000.

• Loses control on icy road

Timothy Jose Wilborn, 43, of Des Moines, was northbound in the 3800 mile of Vine Avenue at 9:05 p.m. on Dec. 14. He reported to O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office that he was driving below the speed limit on the ice-covered road, but lost control of his 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. It entered the east ditch and came to rest on the driver’s side.

Wilborn was not injured. Damage to the Avalanche is estimated at $10,000.
