An Everly man was elected to the board of directors of the Iowa State Fair during the Iowa Association of Fairs Conference and Annual Meeting, held December 9-11 in Des Moines.

VerDon Schmidt was elected to represent the Northwest District on the state fair board. Schmidt fills a vacancy created by retiring member Dave Hoffman, who served on the board since 2010 and was president from 2019-2020.

Schmidt is also a member of the board of directors of the Clay County Fair and serves on its executive committee.

Delegates from six geographic districts who attended the meeting also elected two members to serve two-year staggered terms on the state fair board. Directors who were re-elected to their districts are Tennie Carlson, Stratford (north central); Gary Van Aernam, Exira (southwest); Deb Zumbach, Coggon (northeast); Jo Reynolds, Indianola (south central); and Gary McConnell, Bloomfield (southeast).

Northwest Iowa is also represented on the state fair board by Darwin Gaudian, of Primghar, who is serving his first term as president.
