Memorial services for Evelyn M. “Evie” Schuck were held Saturday, Dec, 10, 2022, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal. Pastor Mark Wilms officiated. All of Evie’s grandchildren were her pallbearers. Interment was in North Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Spencer. Warner Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
Evelyn (Evie) May Schuck was born on March 9, 1916 on a farm near Gaza and Sutherland. Her parents were Henry and Millie Engelke Petersen and she grew up with two siblings, Wilbur (Pick) Petersen and Nora (Norie) Warren. She lost a younger 10 month-old sister, Lorene Emma, to pneumonia.
Evie went to school in Gaza and played basketball in high school. She was active in 4-H and showed a Holstein calf at the county fair in Primghar when she was 9 or 10 years old. Making and pulling homemade taffy was one of the many childhood memories she treasured. She was close to many of her cousins and enjoyed riding horses and spending time with them on the farm. Some of her aunts and uncles included her in their travels when she was a teenager, which gave her the opportunity to attend the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago as well as visiting California and the Black Hills.
Evie married Bernard (Brownie) Schuck in 1940 and had two daughters, Shari (Emmert) and Kathi (Sokness). They lived on a farm south of Royal where she was a busy farm wife and mother, known for her delicious cooking and baking. Her fried chicken is remembered to this day as are her sour cream raisin pie, mock angel food cake, orange rolls and many other desserts, pies and cookies. She also kept a large garden and canned many fruits and vegetables, including fantastic sweet pickles.
Evie was active in her church, Bethlehem Lutheran in Royal, participating in Dorcas Circle and teaching Sunday school to kindergarten children. For four years, she worked part time at the Royal Post Office. Evie was also involved with card clubs, bowling teams and was known to visit many people in the hospitals and nursing homes in the surrounding area, always taking treats with her to share.
Evie and Brownie spent 17 winters in Mesa, Ariz., where they lived at the Towerpoint Resort. They enjoyed dancing, traveling and making friends from all over the country. They moved from their farm northwest of Royal to a house in Spencer in 1993. After Brownie passed away in 1999, Evie lived on her own with her beloved cat, Mattie, who kept her company and entertained her many visitors. In the spring of 2014, Evie became a resident of Longhouse Nursing Home after a fall, where she remained until her death. She loved getting visitors, sharing a sweet treat and talking about past and present news.
Evie died on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022, at the age of 106. Evie lost her daughter, Kathi Sokness, in June 2017.
She is survived by daughter, Shari Emmert, and husband, Kenneth; five grandchildren: Barb (Emmert) Fletcher and husband, Randy, Julie (Emmert) Gerstandt and husband, Todd, Steven Emmert, Jill Sokness, and Joel Sokness and partner, Sarah Aldridge; three great-grandchildren: Kyle Fletcher and wife, Allie (McCarty); Carly (Fletcher) Hermstad and husband, Greg; and Caitlyn Fletcher and partner, Lucas Carstensen; and three great-great-granddaughters: Hallie Fletcher, Hannah Hermstad and Lauryn Fletcher; as well as cousins, numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends who will all miss her kindness and open heart.
