Several holiday open houses planned

Multiple area businesses will host their holiday open houses in the next week. See ads inside for Treimer’s Insurance, Evertek, State Bank & Insurance, Hartley Municipal Utilities, United Community Bank and Fiesta Foods.

Chamber vendor fair is Sunday in Hartley

The Hartley Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual holiday vendor fair on Sunday, Dec. 4 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Hartley Community Center.

Lions Burger Bar slated for Sunday

The Hartley Lions Club will hold its annual burger bar on Sunday, Dec. 4 during the Chamber of Commerce’s holiday vendor fair.

3 options at Red’s next week

Red’s Catering in Hartley will be serving three carry-out options on Wednesday, Dec. 7. See the ad on Page 5 for more details.


Upcoming blood drive at Spencer

LifeServe Blood Center is conducting a drive at Southpark Mall, 901 11th Street SW in Spencer, on Monday, Dec. 5 from 1:45-6 p.m.

Hawk winter sports teams start seasons on the road

Three road games to start the season are on the schedule for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys’ basketball team. The Hawks play at Woodbury Central on Dec. 1 and at Trinity Christian on Dec. 2. They also have a boys’ JV/V doubleheader scheduled at Sioux Central on Dec. 5.


Okoboji/HMS wrestlers will start the season in a double dual with Spencer and GT/RA on Dec. 1 at Spencer. The Pioneers will host their varsity invitational on Dec. 3 at Milford.

The start of the H-M-S bowling program’s inaugural season was delayed, as the Nov. 29 meet with MMCRU is postponed to Monday, Dec. 12. Next up on the bowlers’ schedule is an invitational on Dec. 6 at Spencer Bowl. Other teams involved are Emmetsburg, MMCRU, Pocahontas Area and Sioux Central.

Classic movie matinee Dec. 6 at HPL

Hartley Public Library will host a classic movie matinee at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Everyone is welcome for the screening of “Christmas in Connecticut.” Popcorn and hot drinks will be provided.

Monday, Dec. 5: Breakfast – Cereal, pop tart (9-12), fruit, juice; Lunch – Mini corndogs, baked beans, cucumbers, oranges.

Tuesday, Dec. 6: Breakfast – Egg/cheese on biscuit, fruit, juice; Lunch – Chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, corn, mixed fruit, roll (9-12).

Wednesday, Dec. 7: Breakfast – Breakfast pizza, fruit, juice; Lunch – Softshell taco, lettuce/cheese, red peppers, green beans, pineapple, bread (9-12).

Thursday, Dec. 8: Breakfast – Waffles, sausage (9-12), fruit, juice; Lunch – Chicken alfredo, breadstick, broccoli/cauliflower, cherry tomatoes (9-12), bananas.

Friday, Dec. 9: Breakfast – Donut, fruit, juice; Lunch – Pizza, carrots/celery, applesauce cup.

Milk is served with each meal. Fruit/veggie bar offered daily.

Regular hours at Royal library

Hours at the Royal Public Library are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m.; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Food pantry at Hope Lutheran

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.

Al Anon meetings at 3 area locations

Al Anon meetings are held at the following locations each week:

Wednesday, 8 p.m., 511 Southmoor, Spencer; Thursday, 8 p.m., Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Royal; Sunday, 7 p.m., Sanford Medical Center, 118 N 7th Ave., Sheldon.
