Winter Wonderland in Everly is Dec. 2

Citizens in Everly are gearing up for the town’s annual Winter Wonderland event slated for Friday, Dec. 2

The Festival of Trees will be held at the Hap Ketelsen Community Center thanks to the sponsorship of The Friends of the Everly Public Library. There will be a variety of trees and collections for guests to admire while they wait for Santa and Mrs. Claus’ visit. There will also be a meal served for a free will donation, and the Clay County Countrymen 4-H Club will hold a bake sale.

Several Everly businesses will also hold holiday open houses that day. See the ads on Page 4 for complete details.

H-M-S Giving Tree returns for holidays

Local residents can once again participate in the H-M-S Giving Tree project this holiday season.

Ornaments are available for pick up at Iowa State Bank and Sanborn Savings Bank in Sanborn; Treimer’s Insurance Agency, United Community Bank and Savings Bank in Hartley; and JR’s in Melvin. Wrapped gifts are due back by Dec. 9.

Service of Remembrance is Nov. 28 in Spencer

Warner Funeral Home, Avera @ Home of Spencer Hospital, Abben Cancer Center and area churches are again sponsoring a Candlelight Service of Remembrance for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one.

Novel is next discussion topic at Hartley library

Between the Covers Book Club will meet in the front room of the Hartley Public Library on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. The book to be discussed is “Beartown” by Fredrik Backman.

From the author of “A Man Called Ove,” this novel dives into the lives of residents of the small town of Beartown. By the lake in Beartown is an old ice rink and in that ice rink Kevin, Amat, Benji and the rest of the town’s junior ice hockey team are about to compete in the national semi-finals – and they actually have a shot at winning. All the hopes and dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys.

Under that heavy burden, the match becomes the catalyst for a violent act that will leave a young girl traumatized and a town in turmoil. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown.

This is a story about a town and a game, but even more about loyalty, commitment and the responsibilities of friendship; the people we disappoint even though we love them; and the decisions we make every day that come to define us. In this story of a small forest town, Fredrik Backman has found the entire world.

Crop Advantage Series meetings begin in January

The 2023 Crop Advantage meetings will give producers a solid foundation of current research-based crop production information to help make smart, informed decisions for their farming operation.

The meetings are an opportunity for farmers and crop advisers to hear current research and crop production information from Iowa State University. ISU Extension and Outreach specialists will provide updated management options and recommendations on crop production issues facing Iowa growers.

Meetings include continuing education credits for Certified Crop Advisers and pesticide applicator recertification. All sites offer private pesticide applicator continuing instruction which is included in the registration fee.

“There is no other program in our crop production education year where we are able to bring this many Iowa State University Extension and Outreach specialists together to sites across the state. We’re excited to provide the quality, in-person education farmers have come to expect,” said Extension Field Agronomist Meaghan Anderson in a news release.

Over 1,500 individuals attended one of 14 Crop Advantage meetings across the state in 2022, representing all 99 Iowa counties and surrounding states. Approximately 85 percent of attendees said information from Crop Advantage would likely save them between $5 and $20 per acre.

Program topics vary by location and are selected for regional issues. Topics on the agenda include tar spot in corn, crop market outlook for 2023, changes to P and K guidelines, soybean gall midge, climate outlook, risks and rewards of ag carbon credits, weed management issues and many more. Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.
