A Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball player and the entire team have received statewide postseason recognition.

Senior Morgan Grooters is the recipient of the E. Wayne Cooley "You Can" Award. She is the daughter of David and April Grooters, of Sanborn.

The "You Can" award is given by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association, and is named for the longtime executive secretary of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

According to the IGCA, "The 'You Can' Award illustrates the qualities of determination, character and the values of Pursing Victory with Honor."

A nominee must show elements of good character (trustworthiness, fairness, caring and citizenship), and have influenced her team in a positive manner while demonstrating great character and overcoming great odds or sacrifice.

The volleyball team also received the Distinguished in Academic Achievement award from the IGHSAU. To qualify for the award, the team cumulative grade point average must be between 3.25 and 4.0. H-M-S has an outstanding GPA of 3.75.
