Give them the Green Light

O'Brien County participating in Operation Green Light for Veterans Nov. 7-13

Local residents can show support to America's veterans next week with the simple twist of a light bulb.

O'Brien County Veterans Affairs Administrator Katie Ginger is asking government entities, businesses and residents to participate in Operation Green Light for Veterans Nov. 7-13. The special week is designated to recognize veterans for their service and sacrifice by displaying a green light on the exterior of buildings.

"I feel that it is important that we as a county participate to show that we care about our veterans," said Ginger. "By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported."

Those interested in participating can change one of their exterior lights to green or display other green lights on the outside of their property. This is the first year O'Brien County is participating in Operation Green Light for Veterans, with the board of supervisors officially designating the week by signing a proclamation in October.

According to Ginger, the week also raises awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans. There are approximately 950 veterans residing in O'Brien County alone, and she felt it was important that residents reflect on their service to the nation.

"We want to make sure our veterans and their families know that their service mattered, that we are grateful for their sacrifices, and that it is now our turn to make sure they are served by their county government and our community," Ginger said.

Ginger is also using the week to spread awareness about the resources available to veterans. Her office helps coordinate a plethora of county-, state- and federal-level programs for veterans and their families in addition to holding outreach events throughout O'Brien County.

Over the past year, Ginger's office has started a small veterans food/hygiene pantry available to any veteran in need. Additionally, monetary donations have allowed O'Brien County VA to give back to veterans in nursing homes with care packages during holidays. The office also helps support Honor Flight participants with monetary donations to assist with expenses.

Ginger encouraged O'Brien County municipalities, residents and business owners to join in saluting veterans next week. To make it easier, her office will have 50 green light bulbs available on a first come, first serve basis to those wanting to participate in Operation Green Light for Veterans.
