The Melvin Fire Department and six farmers with disks assisted at the scene. The cause is believed to be a hot bearing on farm equipment.
• Vehicle collides with semi-trailer
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 2000 Peterbilt tractor and semi-trailer driven by Jerry Jay Nieuwenhuis, 51, of Primghar, was westbound on 390th Street at 9:41 a.m. on Oct. 17. As Nieuwenhuis prepared to turn north onto Oak Hill Avenue, Madeline Marie Wankum, 27, of Merrill, saw the semi was braking but did not see the turn signal. Seeing that she was going to rear-end the semi-trailer, Wankum attempted to swerve but her 2019 Ford Explorer collided with the right rear of the trailer.
According to the report, Nieuwenhuis stated his signal was on for some time as he prepared to make the turn.
Wankum suffered minor injuries but was not transported. Damage to the Explorer was estimated at $10,000 and damage to the trailer was $2,000. Wankum was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Reasonable and Proper Rate.
• Runs into back of another vehicle
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 8:20 a.m. on Oct. 18.
The report stated that Melissa Jo Baker, 40, of Sanborn, was westbound in the 5000 mile of 320th Street and was preparing to turn south onto Nettle Avenue. Sarah Rae Jansma, 19, of Paullina, approached the Baker vehicle at a high rate of speed and did not see it was preparing to turn. An independent witness reported she saw Baker preparing to turn and the brake lights of her 2021 Dodge Durango come on. Jansma did not stop and her 2006 Chevrolet Impala collided with the rear of the Baker vehicle.
Jansma was transported to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by Sheldon Ambulance for treatment of minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Damage estimates were $7,500 for the Durango and $6,000 for the Impala. Jansma was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.
