1947: Light plant gets new diesel engine

• Oct. 30, 1947

The new 1,000 horsepower diesel engine for the Hartley municipal light plant arrived on the Rock Island railroad. Installation would take place as soon as the base was completed.

A surplus ever-normal granary was placed on a 20x20 foot concrete foundation at the rear of the Thorne Sales and Service garage. Plans were to enlarge the foundation and construct a cement block or tile building on the site.

With the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Guy Foley, of Hartley, a new partnership was created. The firm of G.I. Foley Furniture and Undertaking was being renamed Foley and Son. Mr. and Mrs. Foley also had three charming daughters.

A leak in a gas reservoir at the Phillips “66” station allowed approximately 200 gallons of gasoline to seep into a well that supplied water to a neighboring household.

• Oct. 26, 1972

An all-day card party sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary was held on Veterans Day at the Community Building. It had been many years since such a gathering had been held in Hartley, and indications were that it would possibly become an annual affair.


Mr. and Mrs. Lacey Jackson purchased the D and M Café on Central Avenue from Doug and Mary Stonehouse. Operating under the name L and L Café, the new eating establishment featured grits with any breakfast of eggs. The Jacksons also owned O.J.’s Drive-Inn on Highway 18.

Two Hartley 4-H’ers exhibited livestock at the Ak-Sar-Ben show at Omaha, Neb. Veronica Adams earned purple and blue ribbons for showing two purebred Shorthorn beef breeding heifers, and Greg Paulsen exhibited a crossbred steer in the beef show.


• Oct. 30, 1997

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Middle School musicians selected to play in the Northwest Iowa Junior High Honor Band were Ashley Adams, Tasha Dummett, April George, Kelly Haack, Kim Harders, Jeff Havlik, Shayne Mayer, Angela McCarty and Stacy Vander Velde.

State Representative Richard Vande Hoef announced he would not seek re-election to the Iowa House in the 1998 elections. Vande Hoef was first elected to the Iowa Senate in 1980 before running for a seat in the House in 1992. He served three terms in both chambers.

H-M-S cross country runners had a successful day at the Class 1A district meet. Lydia Brawner finished seventh to qualify for the state meet. She and four other runners recorded their fastest times of the season while two others ran their second-fastest times.
