Top 20 runners lead H-M-S at South O'Brien meet

Competing in their second races of the week, three Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runners finished in the Top 20 at the South O'Brien meet on Sept. 29.

Bryce Dodge led the Hawk boys with a 15th-place finish, running the course at Paullina in a time of 18:31. George Vargas was right behind, finishing 16th with a time of 18:34.

Damian Dodge came in next, finishing 40th with a time of 19:53. He was followed by Aiden Bush, 45th, 20:12; and Blaine Finster, 52nd, 20:40.

H-M-S finished sixth out of 10 boys' teams, scoring 153 points.

Sioux Central was the champion with 59 points, MMCRU was runner-up with 89 and George-Little Rock/Central Lyon was third with 92. The remaining team scores were Estherville-Lincoln Central 115, Sheldon 118, Gehlen Catholic 169, Trinity Christian 176, West Lyon 185 and South O'Brien 213.

With enough runners to compete as a team, the Hawk girls tied Sheldon for sixth place with 163 points. Lexi Croatt was H-M-S's top finisher, placing 17th in a time of 22:50. Gracie Knobloch came in 26th, 23:14; Kamryn Ebel was 49th, 26:24; Juliana Pasillas placed 50th, 26:47; and Clara Funk was 55th, 28:21.


G-LR/CL won the girls' team title with 49 points, edging West Lyon with 51. Other schools with complete teams were Sioux Central 85, E-LC, 93, South O'Brien 146 and Westwood 188.

• at Alta-Aurelia

The week began with H-M-S competing at the Alta-Aurelia meet on Sept. 27.

Boys' results were Vargas, 15th, 18:53; Bryce Dodge, 33rd, 20:11; Ryan Grotluschen, 51st, 21:41; Damian Dodge, 54th, 22:00; and Bush, 56th, 22:25.


The Hawks finished eighth overall with 187 points. Sioux Central was team champion with 67 points followed by Sibley-Ocheyedan 73, MMCRU 98, Manson Northwest Webster 101, West Monona 117, Cherokee 120, Alta-Aurelia 134, South O'Brien 246 and OABCIG 267.

Results for the H-M-S girls were Croatt, 33rd, 23:30; Knobloch, 37th, 23:54; Pasillas, 51st, 27:03; and Funk, 58th, 28:00.

H-M-S did not have enough runners for a team score. The Top 3 finishers were Sibley-Ocheyedan and Cherokee tied with 49 points and Alta-Aurelia 55.

H-M-S will compete in the GLR/CL meet at George on Oct. 6. The War Eagle Conference meet will be hosted by West Sioux (Hawarden) on Monday, Oct. 10.
