• Everly woman, unborn child fatally injured

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a single vehicle rollover in the 4700 mile of M27, at 5:53 p.m. on Sept. 27. According to the report, a 2003 GMC Envoy driven by Courtney Engeltjes, 29, of Everly, was driving southbound when her vehicle left the roadway to the right, over-corrected and entered the east ditch, coming to rest on the driver’s side.

Engeltjes was transported to Spencer Hospital with serious injuries and was later life-flighted. She and her unborn child, Kasey Renea, died as a result of the accident.

The Iowa State Patrol, Spencer Police Department, Peterson Fire and Rescue, Spencer Ambulance and Bud’s Service assisted at the scene.

• Charges filed after traffic stop

A Clay County deputy initiated a traffic stop for a violation in the 3200 mile of Highway 18 at 9:58 a.m. on Sept. 25. The report stated that while waiting for the vehicle to stop, the deputy observed the driver and front seat passenger switch places.

The male in the passenger seat was identified as Chase Kounkel, 37, of LeMars. A license check found he had a barred driver’s license. The female in the driver seat was identified as Ashley Scarlett. A 15-year-old female and a six-month old baby were in the rear seating area.

Scarlett was cited into court and released with a court date. She is charged with two counts of Child Endangerment, aggravated misdemeanors; No Seatbelt, Reckless Driving, Tint and Permitting an Unauthorized Person to Drive, all simple misdemeanors.

Kounkel was taken to the Clay County jail where he was charged with Driving While Barred, two counts of Child Endangerment, both aggravated misdemeanors; Speeding, Reckless Driving, Tint, No Seatbelt, Driving Under Suspension and Failure to File S.R. Insurance (DUS). Kounkel was released on a $2,000 cash or surety bond.

• Collision at intersection totals vehicles

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a personal injury accident at approximately 10 a.m. on Sept. 25.

The report stated a 2017 Volkswagen Golf driven by Paul Montague, 75, of Middleton, Wis., was westbound on A34/220th Street. After stopping for a stop sign he proceeded into the intersection in front of a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Kevin Reverts, 59, of Hartley, that was northbound on M27/130th Avenue. Reverts could not stop in time to avoid the collision. Montague’s vehicle continued northwest into a cornfield. Reverts’ vehicle spun and came to rest in the northwest corner of the intersection.

Montague and a passenger, Joan Montague, were trapped in their vehicle and extricated by mechanical means. Both were transported to Lakes Regional Healthcare with suspected serious/incapacitating injuries. Neither Reverts nor a passenger in his vehicle was injured. Both vehicles were considered totaled.

The Lake Park Fire Department, Lake Park Rescue, Milford Fire Department, Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance and Boji Towing & Recovery assisted at the scene.

• Rear end collision in Clay County

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that at 5:45 p.m. on Sept. 27, a 2018 BMW X5 driven by Stacy Kruse, of Spencer, was eastbound in the 2800 mile of Highway 18 and slowed for vehicles turning left. Devon Naig, of Spirit Lake, was also eastbound and failed to slow his 2004 Nissan Titan, which collided with the rear of the BMW.

No injuries were reported. The BMW and the Nissan owned by Kruse Natural Stone and Tile suffered disabling damage.

• Manure spreader slides into ditch

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported a 2014 Case Steiger 420 operated by Brice William Goosen, 25, of Paullina, was pulling a 10,000-gallon manure spreader southbound on Taft Avenue at 12:55 p.m. on Sept. 30. As Goosen slowed to allow a semi to pass, the fully-loaded manure spreader slid into the ditch and came to rest upside down with the tractor’s rear wheels on top of it, with the tractor blocking the southbound lane.

Goosen was not injured. Damage was estimated at $345,000.

• Vehicle fishtails several hundred feet

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident that occurred at 7:26 a.m. on Sept. 16. They reported that a 2013 Kia Sportage driven by a 15-year-old juvenile female from Spencer was westbound in the 2400 mile of 330th Street. After crossing a bridge, the Kia entered the eastbound side of the road and started fishtailing for several hundred feet. It started to side-slide and entered the north ditch, rolled and came to rest on its top.

The juvenile was not injured. Damage to the Sportage owned by Peter Crew was estimated at $8,000. The juvenile was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

• Ends up in ditch

A 2013 GMC Sierra driven by Duane Lance Clark, 58, of Spencer, was eastbound on 400th Street at 7:55 p.m. on Oct. 1. According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Clark was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of the vehicle and drove into the ditch. The Sierra struck the ditch and water in it.

Damage to the GMC was estimated at $18,000. Clark was not injured. He was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.
