• Drug arrest at Clay County jail
A Clay County deputy was contacted on Sept. 7 by a correctional officer that drug paraphernalia was located in the personal property of Braden Cody Hatfield, 31, of Ceylon, Minn., who had been brought to the jail.
Hatfield was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and was held to appear before the magistrate.
• Charged with drug-related offenses
A Clay County deputy initiated a traffic stop for a speeding violation in the 4700 mile of Highway 71 at approximately 8 p.m. on Sept. 9. The deputy smelled the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle and it is alleged that two men in the vehicle were smoking marijuana.
A search of the vehicle was conducted and marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found. Jacob Ferguson, 18, of Pocahontas, and Jose Medel-Martinez, 18, of Laurens, were placed under arrest and transported to the Clay County jail.
Ferguson was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Speeding and Minor in Possession of Tobacco, all simple misdemeanors; and Driving While Revoked and Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana, both serious misdemeanors. Medel-Martinez was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. They were held in jail to appear before the magistrate.
• Spencer woman charged with OWI
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that Nakita Martinefski, 31, of Spencer, was stopped by a deputy at 10:03 p.m. on Sept. 10 in the 2400 mile of Highway 18 for an equipment violation. It is alleged that Martinefski had been consuming alcoholic beverages. She was run through a series of field sobriety tests and was determined to have been operating while under the influence.
Martinefski was arrested and transported to the Clay County jail where she was charged with OWI-1st offense. She was held in jail to appear before the magistrate.
• Collide at North Y
Two vehicles collided at the intersection of Highways 18 and 71 (Spencer North Y) at 12:31 p.m. on Sept. 11. According to the report, a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Randal Martin, 73, of Arnolds Park, was traveling eastbound on Highway 18. He stopped at a stop sign and proceeded into the intersection where his vehicle was struck by a 2008 Ford F150 driven by Willard Beaver, 85, of Spirit Lake, who was southbound on Highway 71.
No injuries were reported. Damage to the F150 was estimated at $8,000 while the damage estimate for the Silverado was $5,000. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Spencer Police Department and Bud’s Service.
