1997: Community center burns mortgage early

• Sept. 18, 1947

Section 21 of every township in Iowa was being surveyed to determine the amount and quality of corn produced. Sections surveyed in O’Brien County showed the county in a very favorable position regarding yield. Some of those interviewed estimated their yields at 40 to 50 bushels per acre.

The American Legion Post voted to award two medals annually at Commencement to outstanding students of the senior class of Hartley High School. One medal would go to an athlete displaying superior ability and clean sportsmanship. The other would be presented for punctuality, dependability, industry, reliability and good scholarship.

The Hartley Rockets, newly-formed independent gridders, dropped their season opener to the heavier Sutherland Bulldogs, 13-0, before 600 fans in Hartley.

• Sept. 14, 1972

Three mobile homes were located on the site of the Sunrise Mobile Home Court in northeast Hartley, even though it was still under construction. Ed Rons was the developer. The court had places for 13 mobile homes and could be enlarged. Complete utility service was available for each home.

One incumbent and one new member were elected to the board of the Hartley Community School. Norman Olson, representing District No. 2, was re-elected with 154 votes. Lanny Dillingham, running unopposed for the District No. 1 seat, received 156. He replaced Marlin Vetter who did not seek another term.

The O’Brien County Office of Economic Opportunity Advisory Board voted to move the OEO office from Sheldon to the courthouse at Primghar, and to change the name to O’Brien County Outreach Center. County Coordinator Connie Hadden was to make regular half-day visits to all of the towns in the county, including Hartley.

• Sept. 18, 1997

Over 20 Hartley women attended the annual meeting of the Spencer District United Methodist Women, which was held in Hartley. An interview with Welthy Albright, who was 101 years young, was shown. She attended the meeting with her daughters.

Ed Harders, Darrel Hennings, Kenny Petersen and Gale Bobolz had the honor of burning the mortgage for the Hartley Community Center. A special event was held to celebrate the retirement of the $111,000 note taken out at Security State Bank in 1991. The loan was paid off four years early.

Exchange students attending classes and participating in activities at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School were Toyohiro Moril, of Tsurugashima, Japan; Saskia Regerbis, of Schorndorf, Germany; and Rachel Faco, of Foetaleza, Brazil.
