• 4 injured in accident near Royal

Four persons were injured in an accident that occurred on Aug. 30 near Royal.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, a 16-year-old juvenile female from Spencer failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection of 160th Avenue and 400th Street. Her 2017 Hyundai collided with a 2004 Ford Excursion driven by Jean Steen, 34, of Sutherland. The impact caused the Steen vehicle to go into the north ditch where it rolled several times.

Steen and two children in her vehicle were transported to the Spencer Hospital. The juvenile driver sought her own treatment. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $10,000.

The juvenile was cited for Failure to Obey Stop Sign and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Responsibility.

• Accident on level B road

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Willie Leon Conley, 17, of Paullina, was westbound on 340th Street and drove through a mud hole on a level B road. He lost control of the 2007 Kia Spectra which rolled once, coming to rest on the wheels.

Conley and a passenger, Donald Marion Wallinga, 16, of Sanborn, exited the vehicle and called family. The report stated both received minor cuts but refused medical assistance. Damage to the Kia was estimated at $5,000.

Conley was cited for Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability-Accident.

• Clarification of DOT regulations

The Sentinel-News reported last week that a tractor/semi-trailer was involved in an accident in the construction zone on Highway 18 in Hartley. The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that the driver, Franklin Carter Huss, of Spencer, stated there were no width restriction signs prior to entering the construction zone and there was no alternate route offered for oversize loads.

The sheriff’s office has since added the following information: “According to a supervisor with the DOT, those who hold yearly oversized load permits are required to check the DOT website for any construction notices, which include lane width restrictions, and plan the route accordingly. The DOT website did list the construction zone in question as having a lane width restriction.”
