Thorne’s Sales and Service was appointed an authorized dealer for Massey-Harris farm implements. Several tractors were on display in their showroom.

Early reports on high school registrations at the Hartley Public School indicated enrollment would set an all-time high by passing the 200 mark. There were 199 students registered and at least a half dozen more latecomers were expected.

Coaches Harold Church and Tom Dunsmoor had their hands full trying to take care of the large football squad which reported for practice. Seventeen letter winners reported for duty and were going through conditioning paces for the tough assignment ahead. The squad showed much promise of becoming one of the best in Hartley’s history.

Mrs. Cleo Schroeder, of Hartley, was appointed to serve on the O’Brien County Board of Social Welfare. She was named by the Board of Supervisors to fill the vacancy created by the death of A.C. Hoper, of Hartley. He had served as chairman of the Board of Social Welfare since 1960.

A series of break-ins at Danceland was being investigated by the Hartley Police Department. Liquor and beer valued at $140 was recovered by Officer David Adams. The evidence was allegedly found by a group of juveniles in a field south of Neebel Park.

The Hartley Booster Club was looking forward to an exciting year of both girls’ and boys’ sports activities. The club shared financially in the expense of the 1972 athletic banquet speaker and also purchased videotapes that were used for girls’ and boys’ sports.

A Century Farm Award was presented to the family of Verlene Mori, of Hartley. The family farm was located in Clay County, rural Everly, and had been in the family since 1890. The award was presented by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Dale Cochran and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation Vice President Craig Lang.

A team from Community Memorial Health Center planned to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. Team members were staff at CMHC and family members of residents in the CCDI Unit.

Allison Meerdink, of Hartley, was among the O’Brien County 4-Hers who exhibited items at the Iowa State Fair. Meerdink received a blue ribbon in the Visual Art Division for her decorated Christmas tree.
