Hawk coach Jay Eilers greets Spirit Lake coach Josh Bolluyt during the team meeting prior to Friday night's scrimmage.

It wasn't anything like an official game, but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Spirit Lake's football teams put on the pads and helmets for a scrimmage Friday night at Hafer Field in Spirit Lake.

The varsity offenses each ran 12 plays against the varsity defenses, followed by 12 plays by the JV offenses against the JV defenses. They repeated that sequence before each varsity offense had three chances to make a first down in a short yardage situation.

Game 1 for both teams is Friday night. H-M-S travels to Hawarden to take on West Sioux while Spirit Lake will play at Spencer.
