Arlene June Triplett, the daughter of John Edward and Dora (McKeighan) Giese, was born Feb. 15, 1934 at home in Harrison County. She attended country schools at Walnut and Atlantic until she moved with her family to Sutherland in December 1945. She finished her education at Sutherland where she graduated from Sutherland High School in 1952. After graduation she attended school at NBT in Sioux City.

Arlene married Thomas Triplett on Dec. 24, 1952 at Van Buren, Ark., while Tom was enlisted in the U.S. Army. Arlene worked at various businesses including Doug’s Café and Lemke Food Market while Tom was overseas in the service.

Tom and Arlene began their career in farming in 1955. They were blessed with four children: Darryl, Jeff, Blaine and Kay. They continued farming until their retirement in 2001. She was an active member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland. Most of all, Arlene loved and was fiercely devoted to her family. She especially enjoyed going to all of their activities and spending time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She had many other hobbies and interests: her flowers and garden (when Tom would not spray or pull the plants instead of weeds), dancing, reading, crocheting and knitting, calligraphy, cards and games. She was highly competitive in her card playing, always had a hug and smile for her family, and her last words to anyone leaving their home were “Watch for deer.”

Arlene passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom, in 2019; a son, Blaine and daughter-in-law, Joni; two brothers: John Giese and Donald “Gus” Giese; and two sisters: Colleen Friedrichsen and Violet Meines.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Darryl and his wife, Jean, of Primghar; Jeff and his wife, Jodi, of Spencer; and Kay Sholly and her husband, David, of Hartley; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
