A variety of entertaining events pack this weekend's Royal Fun Days lineup.

Residents of Royal are ready to get raucous this weekend.

The western Clay County community is set to celebrate Royal Fun Days July 15-17. The schedule features events for the whole family, including a few new tidbits to keep things fresh.

"We had a good turnout last year coming off the pandemic cancellation in 2020, and we're trying make it bigger and better this year," said Anne Hagedorn, one of the Fun Days organizers. "We're hoping to see a lot of people there again."

New this year is the UTV/ATV ride. Participants will pilot their rides on a route from Royal to Sutherland, Linn Grove and back to Royal on Saturday, July 16. The ride will depart from Haggy's at 1 p.m., and the Royal Fun Days Committee will be serving a $7 lunch from 11-2 if anyone wants to eat before leaving.

"We have been watching what other towns have been doing, and these rides are becoming more popular," Hagedorn said. "We decided to add to it the schedule because people are interested."

Also new is a ceramics demonstration by D & L Ceramics, of Everly, at the Royal Fire Department Training Building on Saturday at 3 p.m. Additionally, interactive inflatables have been added for children on Saturday from 12-4 p.m., at the park.

Gone this year are the tractor pulls. Alliant Energy is using the field as a staging area for its ongoing electrical main line burying project.

"We're seeing if we can hopefully have [the tractor pullers] back here in the fall," Hagedorn said.

Several returning crowd favorites make up the bulk of the Royal Fun Days schedule.

Things kickoff Friday night with trivia at The Great Hall of Royal at 7 p.m. Everything starts bright and early Saturday with a slow pitch softball tournament, tractor ride and display, car show and bike ride. Also featured are a ping pong drop, kids' games, horseshoe tournament, grill out and kiddie parade.

The afternoon schedule is just as packed. In addition to the aforementioned kids' inflatables, UTV/ATV ride and ceramics demonstration, Fun Days-goers will enjoy a motorcycle/old car fun run, bingo and ice cream at the park, and an all-school reunion. Rounding things out on Saturday are a burger bar at Haggy's from 5-8 p.m. and the street dance afterwards.

Hungry locals can get a full belly Sunday morning courtesy of the Royal Fire Department, which will serve breakfast from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The cornhole tournament closes out the schedule at 1 p.m.
