The Hartley City Council on Monday approved annual wage increases for municipal employees with little fanfare.
Members unanimously approved a 5 percent across-the-board hike with no discussion. In recent years, the annual item has sparked considerable debate.
The increase equates to about $52,000 more than last year's total budgeted wages. The personnel committee comprised of council members Ron Hengeveld and Roxann Swanson originally investigated a 3 percent hike, but rising inflation necessitated a larger increase.
"It's kind of what other communities are doing right now," Hengeveld said.
Overall, the 5 percent wage increase will cost the city $17,000 more than if the council had approved a 3 percent raise.
• Pool opening
Local residents may be tired of hearing it, but Hartley's new pool is inching closer to opening.
Superintendent of Public Works Jaron Benz reported that the variable frequency drives (VFDs) arrived last week and are in the process of being installed, with testing of equipment and employee training to follow. Their delayed arrival and subsequent installation are the final pieces of the puzzle at the new pool, which was originally hoped to open by June 1.
"Things are progressing," Benz said.
Additionally, the new facility will need to undergo an inspection with the Iowa Department of Public Health prior to opening. It is scheduled for Friday, June 24.
