• Occupants ejected from vehicle

Two people received minor injuries as a result of being ejected from their vehicle at 12:55 p.m. on June 5.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Richard Raymond Burns, 70, of Archer, was driving eastbound in the 5000 mile of 360th Street when he lost control of his vehicle on the gravel roadway which had become soft due to a recent rain. The 2013 Honda GL1800H flipped end over end, causing Burns and a passenger, Diane Burns, 70, of Archer, to be ejected.

Both were transported to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by Sheldon EMS for treatment of minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Damage to the Honda was estimated at $5,475.

• Driver falls asleep

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident which occurred at 2:15 p.m. on June 5. The report stated that a 1999 GMC Savana driven by David Lee Nelson, 60, of Cherokee, was southbound in the 4200 mile of Taft Avenue. Nelson fell asleep, causing the van to run off the roadway and strike a mailbox before entering the east ditch. It then struck a driveway and came to rest in a field.

Janice Charlene Nelson, 82, of Cherokee, was transported by Sutherland Ambulance to MercyOne Primghar Medical Center with minor/non-incapacitating injuries. David Nelson suffered minor injuries and was not transported.

Damage to the GMC was listed at $1,100. A damage estimate of $50 was listed for a mailbox owned by James Wagner, of Primghar.

• Semi collides with trailer

A tractor/semi-trailer collided with a smaller trailer while passing on an O’Brien County road at 2:03 p.m. on June 7.

The sheriff’s office reported that a 1993 Dodge Dakota driven by William Glenn Collins, 62, of Hartley, was pulling a homemade trailer with a lawnmower on it. Collins slowed to make a left turn into a driveway at 4480 Silver Avenue. A 2020 Freightliner driven by Alonzo Leftwich, 41, of Deltona, Fla., was also southbound on Silver Avenue. Leftwich stated that the pickup and trailer started to move right and then turned left. As he began to pass, Collins turned in front of the Freightliner which struck the driver’s side of the pickup.

The report stated that Collins’ trailer was equipped with lights but no wiring was near the hitch, so no brake lights or turn signals were functioning. Video recorded by a dash camera in the Freightliner showed Collins turning slightly to the right and then turning left, and the tractor/semi-trailer pulling into the opposite lane to pass. The report stated it does not appear from the video that Collins had his turn signal activated and Leftwich stated he saw no turn signal. Collins stated he had his turn signal activated.

Collins was taken to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by private vehicle for treatment of minor injuries. Leftwich was not injured. Damage to the Dakota was listed at $3,000 and damage to the Freightliner was reported as $20,000. No citations were listed.

• Hits rear of trailer

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Shawn Lee Anderson, 48, of Primghar, was westbound on 460th Street at 11:56 a.m. on June 8. As he slowed for a garbage truck which was turning north onto Oriole Avenue, a 2005 Pontiac driven by Brock Randy Riedemann, 18, of Primghar, was following and was unable to stop. Riedemann’s vehicle ran into the back of a construction trailer pulled by the 2012 Dodge R25 driven by Anderson.

No injuries were reported. Damage estimates were $2,500 to the Pontiac and $1,500 to the trailer. Riedemann was cited for Following Too Close.
