Jean Virginia Rohlf was born July 5, 1925, to Gustaf and Olivia (Baumeister) Grotefeld in May City. She spent her youth in the Hartley area where she received her education, graduating from Hartley High School in 1942.

Following high school, Jean attended Des Moines Beauty School in Des Moines. After completion of the required courses she earned her operator’s license, eventually establishing her own beauty shop right in her hometown of Hartley. For 69 years, women in the area came to Jean needing a simple snip and curl (with a cup of coffee and conversation, of course) or a complete “do-over....
