Jean V. Rohlf, 96, Hartley

June 9, 2022

Jean Virginia Rohlf was born July 5, 1925, to Gustaf and Olivia (Baumeister) Grotefeld in May City. She spent her youth in the Hartley area where she received her education, graduating from Hartley High School in 1942.

Following high school, Jean attended Des Moines Beauty School in Des Moines. After completion of the required courses she earned her operator’s license, eventually establishing her own beauty shop right in her hometown of Hartley. For 69 years, women in the area came to Jean needing a simple snip and curl (with a cup of coffee and conversation, of course) or a complete “do-over.” In any case, they left her shop feeling better about the world than when they came in. Being the naturally caring person she was, many of Jean’s customers became lifelong friends.

Jean was united in marriage to Robert Lee Rohlf at Hartley, on Aug. 7, 1946. Two children, Daniel and Patsy, would complete their family. Along with managing the beauty shop and taking care of her household, Jean made time to be part of her children’s lives by participating in their scouting programs. She took on the role of Den Mother for Cub Scouts and was the Girl Scout Leader for a time. In both cases, the rewards were always worth the time and effort spent.

Since her occupation kept her indoors most days, Jean discovered a round or two on the golf course to be the perfect remedy. She also enjoyed fishing, traveling or just playing cards with friends. She had belonged to the Meadowbrook Country Club for many years and was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, both in Hartley.

On Wednesday, March 30, 2022, Jean left this life at the age of 96 years. Preceding her were her parents, Gustaf and Olivia Grotefeld; and her husband, Robert Rohlf.

Jean is survived by her two children: Daniel Lee, and his wife, Susan Rohlf, of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and Patsy Ann (Rohlf) Di Laura, and her husband, David Kent, of Marana, Ariz.; grandchildren: Jed Rohlf and Ryan Rohlf, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Dallas Di Laura and Dana Di Laura, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; great-grandchildren: Finn, Barclay and Cannon Rohlf, and Phoenix Di Laura; other relatives and friends.

Memorial gifts in honor of Jean will be directed to the Hartley Ambulance Team. Services are pending with the Hartley Funeral Home in Hartley.
