Storms make for windy, wet Memorial Day in NWI

Steve and Kathy Leng's house on South Second Avenue West received a new roof ornament courtesy of Monday's storms.

There was no need to remove your cap during Memorial Day services on Monday – the wind did that for you.

Thunderstorms blew through the region, causing power outages and property damage in several locations. In Hartley, many trees were downed and electricity was out in portions of town in the afternoon.

The weather sent most Memorial Day programs inside during the morning. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sioux Falls, some thunderstorms that passed through the tri-state region produced wind speeds of 80 mph.
